MAGISTRATE'S COURT

In the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr W. C. Cleary, J.P., David McDonald, for drunkenness, was convicted and fined 10s. For casting offensive matter on the footpath he was convicted and fined £2, in default one month's imprisonment. Complimentary Dance

The combined sports and other clubs in Lyttelton gave a complimentary dance in the Excelsior Hall on Saturday night to Mr D. Loader, a member of the Trinity Hockey Club, who has been selected for the New Zealand hockey team which is to tour Australia. Music was provided by the Lyttelton's Own orchestra, extras being played by Miss Iris Scott. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr G. Williams and Miss Betty Prendergast. and a lucky spot fox-trot by Mr O. Serra and Miss I. Grebbel. During the evening, Mr A. L. Graham, president of the Canterbury Hockey Association, presented Mr Loader with a cheque for £43, the proceeds of the dance. New Club Rooms Opened

There were many members and visitors at the opening of the new club rooms of the Lyttelton branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association on Saturday night. The rooms are on the top floor of the Lyttelton Borough Council Chambers, formerly used as a Magistrate's Court room. The large meeting room has a billiards table at one end. while at the other a small but well-equipped stage hrr been erected. In addition, there are smaller rooms and also a kitchen.

The president of the branch, Mr A. Large, presided at the opening. In declaring the rooms opened, the Mayor iWr F. E. Sutton) congratulated the association on the excellent rooms and expressed the hope that the Borough Council would never find it necessary to resume the premises.

The chairman then presented the Mayor with a silver entree dish, to commemorate the occasion.

In his address, the chairman -welcomed the Mayor, the visitors, and members. The membership of the branch had reached 101. Its main object was benevolence. An increasing number of returned soldiers were breaking down in health, and it was the duty of the branch to assist them.

Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., congratulated the members on their executive, and on securing such excellent rooms. Mr W. H. Darby, a member of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, referred to a former Lyttelton man who had brought honour to the town. Seaman Charles Williams. Seaman Williams, after taking part in an Antarctic expedition, had served in destroyers during the war, including the famous Broke, and had taken part in the ianding at Zeebrugge. It was just after the war that he had met an untimely end in a disaster which overtook a small coastal steamer, the Tainui, when she was destroyed by fire a few hours after leaving. Lyttelton. He felt that his memory should be perpetuated, and he therefore had pleasure in presenting to the Lyttelton branch a cup, to be known as the Charlie Williams Memorial Cup, to remain the property of the Lyttelton branch, and to be competed for annually in any competition arranged by the branch by former servicemen.

The following toasts were honouredThe King; "The Mayor and Councillors" (the Rev. E. E. Maiden —the Mayor); "The Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association and Suburban Branches" (Mr A. G. Sinclair—Mr W. E. Leadley); "Absent Comrades" (Mr R. T. Ings, Mr W. Jeffries sounding "Last Post";; "The Lyttelton Returned Soldiers' Association" (Mr W. E. Leadley—Mr Large); "The Honorary VicePresidents, Members, and the Band" (Mr W. W. Toy—Mr W. T. Lester); and "The Artists" (Mr H. H. Batten).

Items were given by Messrs E. E. Maiden, C. Sumner, J. Cade, Billie Bell, Len. Cummings, and J. Taylor. Community singing was led by Mr W. Watson and Mr H. H. Hoyle played the accompaniments.

Golf

A women's stableford match played at Diamond Harbour on Saturday for a trophy presented by Mrs F. E. Sutton was won by Miss W. White-Par-sons. Mrs R. K. Duckworth and Mrs W. A. Gardiner were the runners-up. A Ladies' Golf Union match played yesterday was won by Mrs E. Cooper, Mrs W. Paine being the runner-up. In a qualifying round for the senior championship o4» the Lyttelton Golf Club played over 36 holes at Charteris Bay yesterday, the following qualified:—C. A. Pascoe 177, F. H. Knights 182. H. Derbidge 193. and A. Jackson 200. A medal match was won by Pascoe, 87, 15—72. Derbidge, 96. 18—78. was the runner-up. A junior medal match was won by L. Coombes.

Miss E. White-Parsons and Miss Z. Hudson will play in the final of a senior championship of the Lyttelton Ladies' Golf Club. A qualifying round was held yesterday for the junior championship, those qualifying being: Miss W. White-Parsons 74, Mrs M. Banfield 77. Mrs A. Jackson 77, and Mrs M. Candy 83. Miss W. WhiteParsons's 74 net was the winning score in a medal match, Mrs M. Banfield, 77 net, being the runner-up.
