WEDDING

DIX—CALLAGHAN

On Saturday morning, at the Church of the Sacred ,Keart, Timaru, the wedding was celebrated of FlyingOfficer Francis Ross Dix (Royal New Zealand Air Force, Wigram) to Miss Mary Ursula Callaghan, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs Denis Callaghan, R~olleston street, Timaru. The bridegroom is the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs H. R. Dix (Blenheim). The Rev. Father W. Peoples performed the ceremony and celebrated Nuptial Mass, and Mr B. Murphy was the organist. . White chrysanthemums and winter roses had been effectively arranged with red anemones in the church for the occasion. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of pink beige needlerun lace, the bodice having a high neckline, slightly cowled. The full sleeves, caught at the wrists, were of net, with appliqued motifs of lace, and a row of cherry velvet buttons trimmed the back of the bodice to the waistline, which was denned by a wide belt of cherry velvet clasped in front. The ground-length skirt was close-fitting to the hipline. then flared fully at the back to suggest a train. Her wide hat of cherry velvet had a stitched brim, and she carried a bouquet of abutilons and red anemones. Miss Vera Callaghan, who attended her sister, was wearing a misty-blue lace frock, made on close-fitting lines to the hipline, then flaring fully to the ground. The bodice had a collar with wide rcvers of a deeper shade of blue velvet to tone with her wide velvet hat. Her bouquet' was of freesias and narcissi. The best man was Mr George South (Christchurch).

At a reception held at the Bay Tearooms, Mrs Callaghan received her guests, wearing a frock of black wool georgette patterned in white, and a black wool georgette coat. Her black hat was finished with touches of white, and she carried a bouquet of deep red anemones. Mrs C. C. Dix, sister-in-law of the bridegroom, wore a navy tailored ensemble and a smart navy hat. Her shoulder spray was of pink anemones.

For travelling, the bride wore a belted suit of feather-weight chevron tweed and a blouse of burnt orange cloque. Her hat was of brown felt finished in front with a jewelled ornament. The bride and bridegroom will leave New Zealand on July 14 by the Rotorua en route to England, where the bridegroom has been detailed for a special course of training in the Royal Air Force.

VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL BALL AT SUMNER

The popularity which for some years has characterised the annual ball of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade was again shown on Saturday evening, when a record number of members and their friends and visitors, attended this entertainment, held in the Sumner Town Hall. Excellent arrangements had been made by the following committee:— Superintendent G. E. Harper, DeputySuperintendent J. Merritt. Branchman F O'Neill, Foreman J. R. Williams, Branchman J. O'Neill, and Fireman J. Merritt. jun. Music was played by Bryson s Orchestra, and supper was served by a committee of ladies.
