PROMISE TO ORAKEI MAORIS
GOVERNMENT HOUSING SCHEME

AUCKLAND, July 3. A radio message from the Prime Minister (the Kt. Hon. M. J. Savage) indicate s that the Government's intentions regarding the Orakei Maoris are not now quite so definite as they were. The Maoris sent Mr Savage a message on June 29, and the Prime Minister replied that he had referred the matter to the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser). Mr Fraser sent a message to the Maoris giving the text of his reply to Mr Savage. That r,eply stated that Mr Savage's promise,- made to the Maoris m Ngaruawahia before his departure, would be honoured; and the Maoris believe that the promise means that they will be compensated at Orakei, and not elsewhere^ Mr Fraser added that the land was need, d for the Government housing scheme* but Nia Hiri, the Orakei criief, said to-day that it was the first time that ans housing scheme for Orakei had bee. mentioned. He expressed satisfaction with Mr Savage's attitude.
