HUNT CLUB BALL

MANY GUESTS AT ASHBURTON

The most popular event in the social year at Ashburton—the annual ball of the Ashburton branch of the Christchurch Hunt Club—was held at the Radiant Hall last evening, when there was a large attendance of members of the Hunt Club and friends, including many visitors from Christchurch and South Canterbury, who are staying at Ashburton for the annual point-to-point steeplechase meeting to-day. The decorative scheme was simple, vet effective. Overhead vari-coloured paper streamers were arranged, with inverted Japanese sunshades containing clusters of balloons. Cabbage tree foliage from Surrey Hills, gorse bloom from Longbeach, and holly were arranged round the hall, and greenery was used effectively as decoration for the front of the orchestra} dais. The corners of the hall and the gallery had been converted into comfortable lounges, and the supper tables were bright with holly berries. Very complete arrangements were made by an energetic committee, comprising Mesdames J. H. Grigg, A. N. Grigg, L. R. Clarke, Misses A. Lemon, T. L. Jackson (honorary secretary). Messrs H. F. McElrea and R. D. Hefford.

Mrs J. H. Grigg, wife of the president wore a frock of black velvet with a chiffon flowered coatee; Mrs A. N. Grigg, wife of the deputy-master, gold and white brocade with gold flowers at the neckline; Mrs Clarke, ink-blue satin with a spray of violets at the neckline, and a violet coatee: Miss Lemon, a black frock with floral tunic; Miss Jackson, a black panne velvet frock relieved with a spray of orange and pink flowers. Fritz Seymour's band provided the music.

COMING-OF-AGE PARTIES

Mr and Mrs A. Robertson (Flockton street, St. Albans) celebrated the com-ing-of-age of their. daughter Maynie, by holding a dance in the Winton Street Hall.

During the evening items were given by Miss A. Brackenbridge, Messrs C. B. Hall, F. Lovatt, G. H. Jackson, G. Shaw, E. James and partner. Entwistle's Melody Dance Band provided the music, assisted by Mr B. Savage. Prize winners were Mr and Mrs I. O. Sheppard, Miss A. Brackenbridge and partner, Miss B. Dingwall and partner, and Miss B. Munro and partner.

An enjoyable party was given by Mr and Mrs T. E. McKenzie (Jolie street, Akaroa) in the Oddfellows' Hall, Akaroa, in honour of the coming-of-age of their second son, Robert. There was a large attendance of friends, including relatives from Christchurch.

The hall was decorated with green and gold streamers, and yellow narcissi brightened the supper tables. The Mayor of Akaroa (Mr F. R. E. Davis), in proposing the health of the guest of honour, expressed regret at his departure from Akaroa and wished him success in his new position in Wellington. Opportunity was also taken to say good-bye to Mr and Mrs J. C. Tikao (Wainui), who will shortly make their home in Christchurch. They, with Mr J. Drummond, played the enjoyable dance music.

Mr Jack McKenzie was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Ida Phillips and Mr Peter Narbey. A mystery parcel competition was won by Mr R. McKenzie.

The popular old-time dance will be held as usual to-night in St. John Ambulance Hall. There will be Monte Carlo and lucky spot dances during the evening. Hughie Evans' band will supply the music.
