CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Peter Fraser, wife of the Acting-Prime Minister, Dr. Sylvia Chapman, and Mrs A. M. Hutchinson, members of the Committee of Inquiry into Maternity Services in New Zealand, arrived from the West Coast on Thursday night and left for the north last night. The committee sat in Christchurch yesterday. Miss Cullman (Timaru), who is the guest of Mrs C. F. D'Auyergne (Winchester street, Menvale), will leave next week for a tour of the North Island.

At a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women a motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Murdoch McLeod in her recent bereavement, members standing in silence.

Miss H. Hull, who retired recently from the position of principal of the Christchurch Free Kindergartens after 25 years' service, was unanimously elected a life member of the Christchurch Kindergarten Club at its annual meeting.

Mrs Philip Sherratt (Gisborne) is visiting her mother, Mrs C. A. Wells, Harakeke street. Miss Webster (Jackson's road, Fendalton) will leave this month for a visit to Australia.

Mrs Maurice Louisson (Shu ley) will leave on Wednesday for WelHngton where she will be the guest of Mrs John Russell, Wadestown. Mr and Mrs Alan Avery (Napier), who are the guests of Mrs Charles Beadel, Merivale lane, will leave for the north on Tuesday night.

Mrs M. Parnham (Rotorua) is the guest of Mrs Richard Moore (Cashmere Hills).

Mrs Gordon Fulton (Okuku Pass) will leave early next week on a visit to Wellington.

Miss J. Trotter (Bealey avenue) has left for a holiday trip to Australia.

Miss Eleanor Denniston (St. Asaph street) is the guest of Mrs Cotsford Burdon, Parkhurst, Woodbury.

Mrs Henriksen and Miss Audrey Watkins (Timaru) left yesterday for a visit to Southland. At a recent meeting of the Plunket cabaret committee it was decided that the title of this year's cabaret be "The Gay Nineties." Arrangements are well in hand for this function, which is looked forward to by many Grand National visitors.

Mrs E. G. Wilson (Waimate) has returned home after spending a few days with her mother, Mrs M. Phillips, Kaiapoi. The fifteenth annual ball held in Wellington in aid of the St. Vincent de Paul Society took place at the Town Hall this week, and was a great success. Forty-nine debutantes were presented to his Grace Archbishop O'Shea, who was accompanied by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Connolly, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Wellington, Mr and Mrs T. C. A. Hislop. The hostesses were Mesdames D. H. Riddifbrd, E. M. Cooper, H. J. Stott, and E. R. McKillop.

PUPILS' RECITAL

A musical programme was given by the pupils of Miss Vera Carpenter, in the Concert Hall of the Young Men's Christian Association, before an audience of. parents and friends. Songs were sung by Miss Joyce Hartley, elocutionary items were given by Misses Ailsa Wilson, Elma Bucknell. and little Janie Dixon. The rhythm band of nine children was also accorded hearty applause for its item, which proved a successful feature. Pianoforte solos, trios, and duets were given by the following pupils:— Misses Nenise and Joan Thurston, Ruth Barlass, Joyce Hartley, Mary Aitken, Phyllis Shaw, Gwen Wright, Gwen Pascoe, June Nilsson, Joy Manhire. Esma Bell, Jean Wilson, Valerie Weslake, Valmai Shinn, and Selma Creedon, Messrs Noel Pope, Vernon Ashbolt, Lawrence Gilmore, Masters Peter Aitken, Derek Taylor, Colin Bell, and Jack Findlay. Mr G. T. Thurston presented the certificates from the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College. Prizes were also awarded to many df the pupils. . Miss Carpenter received several beautiful bouquets.

KINDERGARTEN CLUB

Miss Rene Wilkie was elected president of the Christchurch Kindergarten Club at its annual meeting. Other officers elected were:—Vice-presidents, Misses H. Gorrie and E. Page; secretary Mrs Oswald Josling; treasurer, Miss' M. Suckling; committee, Misses Tanner, McKechnie, Twoose, McLauchlan, Hughes, Robertson. On the motion of Miss Gorrie, a vote of sympathy was extended to the relatives of Berna Batcher, an early pupil of Sunbeam Kindergarten, those present standing in silence. After the business meeting a social was enjoyed, competitions and games proving very popular.
