SHEEP EXPORT

SOUTHDOWNS FOR AUSTRALIA

During the month of June further shipments of Southdown rams and inlamb ewes were made to Australia through the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd., per s.s. Waitaki, which is taking a full load each trip. Early in the month a shipment of more than 100 Southdown ewes went away, made up from the following Mid-Canterbury flocks:— 50 mixed ages, from the Estate W. Lochhead, Lakeside. 20 one-shear, from Meredith-Wilson,

Halkett. 10 four, six, and eight-tooth, from W. J. Jenkins, Fair View, Sheffield. 15 one-shear from A. A. Adams, Annat. and 10 ram hoggets, bred by Clarkson's estate. Towards the end of the month the Waitaki on her following trip took a further shipment which included:— Sixty, two, four, six, and eight-tooth from the bock of Mrs G. K. Woodhouse, Racecourse Hill, and two specially selected stud Southdown ewe hoggets from the Canterbury (N.Z.) Seed Company's Oakleigh estate, Leeston. The Oakleigh sheep have been purchased to the order of a Victorian breeder, who intends to use them for show purposes throughout Victoria and South Australia.

All the above consignments have been selected by the company to the orders of Victorian and South Australian breeders. It appears as though a steady export market for lamb breeds is assured to Canterbury breeders for the next few years.

WOOL COMPETITIONS

CANTERBURY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

Judges appointed to value the wool in the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's merino wool competition—Messrs A. Nicholls and S. Howarth—have made their decisions. The result is that Mr J. W. Trolove, of Kaikoura, wins the competition. The sheep in this competition are received as hoggets and shorn. They are all turned out together and shorn again at the expiration of a year. The wool of the second shearing is scoured and judged. Each exhibitor enters three rams, but the prize is awarded for the best individual fleece, and carries with it a handsome silver cup and other trophies. Eighteen sheep were entered in the competition, and the figures for the leading six are as follows:

Gr'sy. Sc'rd. wght. wght. Value.

Similar conditions apply to competitions for halfbred and Corriedale sheep, except that the carcase is valued. The results in these competitions were as follows: —
