COURT RECOMMENDS RECONSIDERATION
REFUSAL OF CONTRACT OF APPRENTICESHIP
The opinion that a case w r as made out for reconsideration by the Christchurch Motor Mechanics' Apprenticeship Committee of its refusal to register a proposed apprenticeship contract for E. Batstone was expressed in a judgment of the Arbitration Court issued yesterday by Mr Justice O'Hegan. The case was heard last work.
The judgment- states: "The commiltre concluded that the appellant was disabled from teaching the trade owing: (1) to the smallness of his premises; and (2) the fact that his plant docs not include a lathe. The appellant states, however, that he proposes shortly to enlarge his premises, and thereafter to add a lathe to his plant, end he points out that in the meantime the young man' could attend the Technical College for tuition in lathe work. There is no question that the appellant himself is a fully comp: tent tradesman, and the proposed apprentice, in the course of his evidence, made it clear that he is willing, even anxious, to work for the appellant. He has served already 18 months v ith the appellant, and it is not denied thet he has made satisfactory progress so
far. As he has now attained the age 20 years, it is not practicable for him to engage in any other skilled occupation. Accordingly we recommend the case to the committee for favourable consideration."
