PARKING PLACES IN MAIN STREET
A meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr F. R. E. Davis), and Councillors B E Baughan, A. Shuttleworth, R. Bruce E. Longden, E. McNabb. and F. Wright. . The North Canterbury Hospital Board wrote advising that the levy would be £133 5s lid, as compared with £l2O 2s 3d for last year. Mr F. A, Hempleman (Marton) forwarded 10s 6d as a contribution to the Hempleman memorial at Peraki. It was decided to have parking places for cars marked off on the main street. The clerk reported that the amount collected for the King George V Memorial was £6O 14s 9d. It was decided to hold a special meeting on July 8, to consider the estimates for the coming year.
Crs. Baughan, Bruce, and Shuttleworth were thanked for gifts of flowering shrubs and native trees for the Domain.
Rugby Football
The second game of the Farnie Cup Rugby competition between the Akaroa High School and Pirates team, played on Thursday, ended in a draw, each side scoring six points. J. Prendergast scored two tries for High School, and S. Phillips and B. Langrope scored tries for Pirates. Mr J. Masefield was referee.
Mothers' Union Mrs F. G. Armstrong, acting-enrolling member, presided over the monthly meeting of St. Peter's branch of the Mothers' Union. A paper sent from, the centre entitled, "The Mind of a Child," was read by Mrs J. E. Armstrong, and later discussed by members. Mesdames A. M. Helps, J. E. Armstrong, and C. Gabbott were the hostesses.
FAREWELL GATHERING AT WAIKARI
REV. H. M. COCKS AND MRS COCKS ENTERTAINED
t There was a large attendance of residents from Waikari and other parts of the Waikari parochial district in the Waikari Public Hall on Thursday evening to bid farewell to the Rev. H. M. Cocks and Mrs Cocks, who will leave in a few days on a holiday trip to England. After community singing, an enjoyable programme was given by the following:—lnstrumental trios, the Misses Arres; songs, Mrs L.. B. Kelly, Mrs T. Widdowson, and Herbert Harrison; dancing and acrobatic items, Zoe Carlyle, Nola and Azalia Clark; recitations by Mrs HassalL Mrs J. B. Page played the accompaniments. The Scargill Dramatic Society presented the play, "Anti-Clockwise," the players being Mrs R. S. Johnson, Mrs T. D. Macdonald, Mrs Bradley, and Mrs Meikle. After the concert Mr R. E. Foster, for the parishioners, spoke of the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Cocks were held by all, and wished them a happy voyage. Mr C H. Bethell, as churchwarden, presented Mr Cocks with a cheque from the parishioners, and also wished them "bon voyage."
Mothers' Union Mrs H. M. Cocks presided over an attendance of 18 members at the monthly meeting of the Waikari branch of the Mothers' Union in the Parish Hall.
An address was given by the vicar, the Rev. H. M. Cocks, and group discussion followed.
Mrs J. B. Page, for the members, wished Mrs Cocks, who will shortly leave OH a trip to England, a happy Voyage, and presented her with a travelling iron. The hostesses at afternoon tea were Mrs T. Greig and Mrs A. Harrison.
BELFAST BOWLING CLUB
OFFICERS ELECTED FOR YEAR
Mr W. T. Rogers, who presided, congratulated at the annual meeting of the Belfast Bowling Club on the sound financial position of the club.
Officers were elected for the year as follows:
Patron, Mr J. R. D. Johns; president, Mr J. A. Robb; vice-president, Mr H. Stevens; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. E. Clarke; delegate to centre, Mr J. A. Robb; committee, Messrs R. Halligan, R. P. Hall, A. Little, L. Scanes. J. Ramsay, and A. Wotton; green superintendent, Mr R. Halligan; selector, Mr H. Stevens; handicapper, Mr W. T. Rogers; auditor, Mr A. Brown.
LECTURE TO CULVERDEN FARMERS
I Under the auspices of the Culver - den branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr Allan Leslie gave an address on the care of hoggets. Mr H. Ingram was in the chair. . Mr Leslie emphasised the need of proper feeding of ewes. When • the lambs were taken from the mothers at weaning time, the paddocks should be fenced in small brakes so that the lambs would be" shifted each week to new pastures and so remain healthy.
JUNE WEATHER AT SPRINGBANK
The rainfall at Springbank for June was 2.36 in. Rain fell on 10 days. Tne heaviest tall was on June 16 and 17, when 1.05 in fell. In June, 1936, there was 1.53 in and in June, 1935, 2.54 in.
The total rainfall for this year to date is 12.06 in, compared with 16.68 m last year, and 8.58 in in 1935. The wet weather has delayed team work on the farms. The wheat crops sown on the lighter land are coming up well, but very little wheat has been sown on the downs land, which has been too wet. A few early lambs are appearing and stock in general is wintering well.
MEDBURY SOCIAL CLUB
The annual meeting of the Medbury Social Club was held recently in the Public Hall. Mr C. Earnshaw presided.
A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr J. DalzelL The officers elected were:—President, Mr J. Fletcher; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mrs E. G. Dalzell; committee, Mesdames H. S. Ginders, G. Topp. E. Denne, L. Plaisted, W. Plaisted, and Messrs H. S. Ginders, C. F. Earnshaw, A. V. Dalzell, and E. G. DalzelL It was decided to begin the social evenings on July 9.
