STRUCK BY A TREE
MAN'S DEATH AT RAKAIA
INQUEST HELD AT ASHBURTON A verdict that William Robert Hamilton, of Rakaia, died of cerebral anaemia after injuries received when he was struck by the branch of a tree, was returned by the Ashburton Coroner (Mr E. C. Bathurst), at the inquest yesterday. Hamilton, who was aged 56, was cutting branches off a tree at his home on June 1 when one of the tree limbs fell on him, injuring his head. Jean Hamilton, wife of the dead man, said her husband was cutting branches off trees in the yard of his home. He called the witness, who saw him coming out from under the branch of a tree. He said he had been hurt and asked her to send for a doctor She heard her husband tell the doctor that the branch of the tree had fallen on him. Dr. B. G. Spiers,, house surgeon at the Ashburton Public Hospital, said Hamilton was admitted to the hospital with a severe scalp wound on June 1. He developed the signs of severe cerebral contusion. His condition improved temporarily for some days and then gradually declined until he died on June 14. A post-mortem examination revealed signs of generalised contusion and a considerable degree of cerebral oedema. He received the most modern treatment for his injuries.
