MANY VISITORS WELCOMED Mrs Rex Bryan was hostess yesterday morning aU pleasant gathering of the Canterbury Travel Club, held at Ballantynes .tea room, and she was assisted by Mrs H. T. J. Thacker and Mrs R T. Tosswill. There was an attendance of 250, and the visitors who were warmly welcomed by Mrs Bryan were Miss Garford and Mrs Gilfillan (Auckland), Mrs Innes (Gisborne. ) Mrs Sladden (Marton) Mr and Mrb John Chapman (Suva), Miss Joy Kerr (Wellington), Miss Graham and Mrs Silver (Waiho, South Westland), Mrs Wilson (Tauranga) Mr and Mrs Vestey (England), Mr E. F. Nichol (Bluff), Mrs McNeil (Wellington), and Miss Jean Steel (Wanganui). Songs were sung by Mrs A. &. u. Lyttlc pianoforte solos were played by Mrs J. C. Cullman, and a very interesting travel talk on South America was given by Mr A. S. Nicholls. Mr J G. D. Ward thanked the performers and Mr Nicholls for their help in making the gathering so enjoyable. PRE-WEDDING PARTY MANY COUNTRY GUESTS Miss Essv Thacker, whose marriage to Mr John Danks will take place on June 29, was the guest of honour at a very pleasant party given in the grey room at Beath's yesterday afternoon by her brother, Mr Arthur Thacker, of Okain's Bay. Spring flowers decorated the tea table. Miss Maisie Powell, of Riccarton, acted as hostess. She wore a grey flannel frock with navy taffeta collar, a short navy military coat, and a navy veiour hat. PARTY AT SUMNER At her home on Richmond Hill yesterday afternoon, Miss Brenda Smith entertained many friends at a very pleasant party given in honour of Miss Marjorie Chambers, who will leave Christchurch on Saturday for Auckland, where her marriage to Mr R. English will take place. Miss Smith's mother and aunt, Mrs B. C. Smith and Miss L. Barry helped in the entertainment of the guests, each of whom brought for Miss Chambers a gift of china. Those present were Mesdames H. Y. Widdowson, Ernest Edridge, H. O. Hewlett, Donald Meyers, lan Cromb, Ralph Beadel, Wincote Price, W. G. W. Jamieson, Misses Marjorie Chambers, Alison Beadel, Noni Thomson, Florence and Marua Seabrook, Mavis Boulton, Patricia Simpson, Marjorie Tingey, and Maisie Jamieson.

SELWYN KINDERGARTEN A social gathering of the local and mothers' committees, parents, and friends of the Selwyn Kindergarten was held in honour of Miss H. Hull, who has retired from the position of principal of Christchurch Free Kindergartens. A number of former members and parents of former pupils were present. Items were given by Lorna Stewart and Doreen Hancock, by the mothers' committee, teachers, and Mrs F. C. Vaughan, who was pianist for the evening. Games and competitions were also enjoyed. On behalf of the local committee, Mrs J. Hamlin presented Miss Hull with two cushions, and Mrs J. Talbot presented two hassocks on behalf of the mothers' committee. Miss E. Pearce presented a bouquet from the teachers. After Miss Hull had responded, supper was served. Those present included Miss H. Hull, Mesdames J. Hamlin, A. Williamson, N. Paterson, St. G.
