A Pigeon Cote
Now is the time to begirt' making a pigeon cote, if you want it to be ready for the spring. The one shown here houses four pairs of birds and is a satisfactory and decorative type of shelter. The timber is lin red pine. Figures B, C, and D show the principal dimensions. Two of the sides are 15in by 3ft (see figure D), and the other two are ljin nar-
rower. Batons 2in by lin are nailed at the top and bottom edges of the sides, and holes are cut as shown in D. The four compartments are formed by divisions fitted and nailed as at F. The floor (3ft by 3ft) is strengthened by batons 2in by lin, nailed round the edges. Cross batons 4in by lin are fitted in the middle, and the floor is nailed to the sides at their lower edges. The flat-top roof should be screwed into position so that it may be taken off when the house
is cleaned. Eight brackets 05% Gtt should be nailed at right angles.to the corners (Fig. B), and the roof should be covered with good felting tacked firmly to'the edges. Figure H shows the details of the sloping four-sided roof—the toip roof. Make a flnial Ift 9in long by 2in by 2in nailed to th.e middle of the flat roof. Fit four triangularshaped supports diagonally between the flnial and the comers of th«
roof to' support the covering board* which may be weather boards or ordinary timber covered with felting. The pole on which the cote it fixed should be 12ft long and 4in square, and it should be let into the ground 2ft 6in or 3ft. The fiat-roofed cote is recommended for fantails and tumblers; these birds like to strut about and. if they have a flat roof of their own for their strutting they are not so likely to wander to neighbouring roofs.
