XING CARNIVAL AT RANGIORA CROWNING CEREMONY HELD With appropriate ceremony, Mr J. E. Strachan, representing the pupils and parents, the successful candidate in the Rangiora High School's king carnival to raise funds for a community hall at the school, was crowned last evening. The ceremony marked the close of the carnival, the proceeds from which amounted to more than £6OO. There was a large attendance. Mr C. I. Jennings, chairman of the Board of Governors, performed the crowning. „ , Mr J. W. Stanton, former pupils candidate, was second, and Mr D. Appleby, representing the citizens and the Board of Governors, third. With Mr Strachan leading, Mr Stanton in second place, and Mr Appleby in third place, the position of the candidates remained steady for several days before the carnival opened on Tuesday. Mr Appleby moved into second place late yesterday afternoon, but Mr Stanton later regained his position. Stalls and side-shows were busy yesterday afternoon and evening, although wet weather affected the attendance of the public. Inspectors for High School Two inspectors from the Education Department will visit the Rangiora High School to-morrow and on Monday to prepare the triennial report for ] the department. Examination candi-1 dates are inspected each year, but once | in three years a special inspection is j carried out and a report prepared on the work of the school as a whole. Women's Missionary Union The twelfth anniversary of the Rangiora branch of the Methodist Women's Missionary Union was celebrated at a meeting yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs W. T. Dennis) presided. Life in Fiji was described by Miss M. Graham. Items were given by Mrs J. Peryman and Misses D. Ayers and J. Dennis. A stall for the branch's funds realised a satisfactory sum.

COUNTY COUNCILS WAIPARA The adjourned annual meeting of the Waipara County Council was held recently. Mr W. K. McAlpine (chairman), who presided, was re-elected chairman. Mr A. Cowie was re-elected-deputy-chairman, and Messrs A. Cowie and J- Quigley were appointed a finance committee. The chairman. Mr W. K. McAlpine, reporting upon the activities of the council, expressed satisfaction that the financial position, which was very sound, had been maintained and improved, in spite of a considerably increased works programme. The public debt had been further reduced by £867. and now stood at £29,899. with accrued sinking funds of £2112. a net debt of £27.787. During the year four miles of highway had been prepared and sealed, and a further three miles had been improved ready for sealing next season. Additional spans had been added to three bridges, eiqht bridges had been strengthened and widened, and three new bridges had been built. Expenditure during the year, including provision for depreciation of plant, had amounted to £22,957. In concluding his report, the chairman expressed, his thanks for the assistance and co-operation of members. Monthly Meeting At the June meeting of the council Mr W. K. McAlpine presided. The financial statement showed that £555 17s lOd had been received and paid into the bank, and the county fund account was in credit to the extent of £1660 9s lOd, but after making the payments there would be an overdraft of £56 18s 2d. It .was decided to call tenders for the metalling of roads In the county. The Makara County Council asked for the council's support of a resolution about amalgamation; that a poll of ratepayers should decide whether any schemes should be adopted. It was decided to advise the member of Parliament for the district that the council favoured this proposal. Plans and specifications of improvement works in the Weka Pass were inspected and the work was authorised. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Phyllis Bailey and Mr Crossen, and a lucky spot dance by Mr and Mrs Bowden. The most successful card players were Mrs Parris and Mr W. H. Neale. PRESENTATION AT LAKESIDE On the eve of her marriage, Miss Daphne Winchester was the guest of the residents of Lakeside at a kitchen evening. At cards the winners were Miss Stace and Mr Vince. Monte Carlo dance prizes were won by Miss B. Chamberlain and partner. Mr H. Schnelle presented a large number of gifts to Miss Winchester. OBITUARY MR F. C. EMMS The death occurred at Kaikoura re- ! cently of Mr Frank Chevalier Emms after a short illness. Mr Emms was born at Leeston, and came to Kaikoura 39 years ago. He was associated with auctioneering firms, and opened a branch for the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd. He took a great interest in various sports in the district, being secretary to the Kaikoura Trotting Club, the Kaikoura Collie Dog Club, and the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Later he began farming on his own account. He married Miss Wayland, and is survived by his widow and two sons, Messrs Frank and Jack Emms, both of Kaikoura. 'ihere was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place on Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. S. Corney conducted the burial service.

i ! PLAYS PRESENTED AT KAIAPOI | 1 Members of the Kaiapoi Methodist Church Amateur Dramatic Club staged two plays in the Sunday schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The proceeds were in aid of the church funds. A Lancashire play was presented by Misses M. Rollinson, N. Wyatt, and Mr and Mrs W. Green, and members of the cast of the second play, a modern comedy, were Misses M. Rinaldi, M. Darling, J. Bennett, Messrs J. Jowers, C. Mcintosh, and W. Green, jun. Musical items were also given by Mrs L. G. Billcliff and Mr A. Hirst LEESTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mr D. J. Ridden presided over the monthly meeting of the Leeston School Committee. The headmaster reported an increase in the roll number to 130 and an average attendance of 124. He recommended that the committee acquire a small area for afforestation purposes. Dr. and Mrs S. R. Cattell, were thanked for giving prizes for essay work. An offer from Mr Free to plough the school section was accepted. Letters were received from the Health Department about the milk scheme and from the Education Board about tree planting.

MEMORIAL SERVICE AT TAI TAPU A memorial service to Mr William Herrick was held on Sunday morning in the Methodist Church, Tai Tapu. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends. The preacher was the Rev. Moses Ayrton. Personal Mrs A. Tanner has returned from a holiday in the North Island. YOUNG FARMERS' CLUB AT LITTLE RIVER There was a good attendance at the Young Farmers' Club's meeting; which was held at Little River recently. Mr R. Barclay presided. Mr W. B. Blair, of Canterbury Agricultural College, gave a talk on "Farm Stock." Personal Mrs W. H. Montgomery, "Wairewa," Little River, left on Saturday for Auckland to join the Monowal for Vancouver, on her way to Europe. Miss May Renish (Pigeon Bay) Is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Johnston (Little River). Mrs H. Marsh and her two sons (Timaru) are visiting friends in Littla River.
