ROADING WORKS PROPOSED

HEAVY EXPENDITURE IN CANTERBURY RECOMMENDATIONS TO MAIN HIGHWAYS BOARD Mainly for widening and sealing of roads, considerable sums will be recommended for expenditure by the Main Highways Board, by the No. 14 District Highways Council. I According to estimates passed at the annual meeting of the council yesterday, a total expenditure of £233,478 is desired in the district. |xhis, stated the chairman (Mr F. Langbein), was more than £IOO,OOO above the amount spent last year. The largest sums are for Slate highways in tne district, on which the following works are recommended: —Sealing Sandy Knolls-Kirwee-Darfield highway, £i5,000; preparation and sealing of Summit Read highway, £11,000; Craigieburn deviation and bridges. £8100; widening at Porter's Pas, £6000;. Bruce Creek bridge and approaches, £3000; Cass river bridge, £3530; sealing West Melton-Sandy Knoll;, £3700. The total departmental expenditure recommended is £92,530. Though £2B 000 vms origin" njovided as recommended expenditure tor sealing 14 mil::; of the Oxford road in the Rangiora County, it was decided to recommend the spending of £4OOO to begin this work, as a sum on account of the total required. The following totals of expenditure recommended for maintenance and improvements are taken from the district 'estimates. The respective shares of the Main Highways Board and local authorities do not necessarily correspond with the totals, as in certain items of expenditure the board s share includes an amount recoverable from the local authority.

County Improvements The following are some of the more important works specified in the estimates, to be carried out under local authorities:— Halswell County—Tai Tapu-Motuka-rara road deviations, £1550; sealing the same road, £IO,OOO. Springs County—Pour miles ol seallins. £6OOO. Wairewa County—Sealing in Little River township (two miles), £3OOO. Rangiora County—To begin sealing of 14 miles of the Oxford road. £4OOO. Kowai County—Stoney Creek bridge, £IOOO. Lyttelton Borough—Evans Pass-Lyt-teJton. widening, £6OOO. Sumner Borough—Swimming-nool deviation. £1500; Sumner-Evans Pass widening. £3OOO. The expenditure of £4OO is recommended for fencing on West Coast roads.
