GERMANY AND ITALY

EXISTENCE OF ALLIANCE NOT CONFIRMED ALLEGED EXAGGERATIONS BY MUSSOLINI (UTHTED PRE 39 ASSOCIATION—COrTBIOHT.) (Received June 7, 2 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. Dr. V. Gayda proclaimed an "Italo-German Defensive Entente" as a sequel to Marshal von Blomberg's visit to Rome, British official quarters were convinced . that no such pact was concluded. The Australian Associated Press learns that this belief is now confirmed.. Signor Mussolini is using every opportunity to provoke public opinion here in order to capitalise and exaggerate the Italo-German rapprochement. On the contrary, Germany's, and particularly Herr Hitler's, mir.trust and dislike of the Italians is in nowise lessened. Herr Hitler is making strenuous efforts to follow up Marshal Blomberg's successful Coronation visit to London by wooing Britain. The speech by the new British Ambassador to Berlin (Sir Nevile Henderson), on June 3, which caused such a flutter in European Chancelleries, is being interpreted as a new Britich move to improve Anglo-German relations. Certainly, in the light of this, Herr Hit'er is anxious to do nothing to offend Britain. He is even desirous of pleasing London in connexion with easing the tension in regard to Spain. The "Daily Telegraph" states that the Italo-German entente is confined to common defensive action against future aggression by Moscow or Red Spain. GERMAN FRIENDSHIP WITH BRITAIN BERLIN PRESS WELCOMES NEW AMBASSADOR'S SPEECH (Received June 7, 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN, June 6. The press reacted gratefully to the speech of the new British Ambassador (Sir Nevile Henderson) at the Anglo-German Society's dinner of welcome, when he advocated a better mutual understanding. The press, with a single mind, seizes Sir Nevile Henderson's comment on some Englishmen's erroneous conception of the aims of Nazrm, from which, he said, they might even learn useful lessons, but is silent on his converse criticism 'of the German suspicion that Britain is trying to hem in Germany. The press makes the occasion one for propaganda in favour of Herr Hitler's p'an for ensuring peace stage by stage in preference to socalled "collective, indivisible peace."
