COTTAGE DESTROYED BY FIRE A five-roomed cottage at Corsair Bay, owned by the Lyttelton Borough Council, was totally destroyed by fire early on Saturday morning. The cottage was occupied by the caretaker at Corsair Bay, Mr L. C. Crowther. who retired at 11 p.m. on Friday. He awakened at 3 a.m. to find his bedroom full of smoke and the sitting' room ablaze. He drove to Lyttelton in his motor-car and gave the alarm at 3.20 a.m,, but by the time the brigade reached Corsair Bay the cottage was 1 too far gone to be saved. Some of the furniture was saved by neighbours. The building was insured for £2OO in the Northern Union office, and the furniture for £350 in the Sun Insurance office. Golf Medal- matches were played at Charteris Bay yesterday, the course, which had received considerable attention during the week, being in excellent condition. Results are:— > Senior men—C. A. The bar 1b still unworkable to-day and several vessels are lying off the entrance waiting for the seas to moderate. The Rata, from Nelson, entered port last night and ia expected to sail to-mor-row morning for New Plymouth and Wanganui. The Waimea is an expected arrival tomorrow from Tarakohe to load for Greymouth and Nelson. The Canopus, from Auckland, ls still outside waiting for conditions to moderate. She is due to Toad coal tor Wellington. The Omana, from Wellington with general cargo, is still in the roadstead waiting for bar conditions to improve and prospects are moderate for her entering port to-day, She part-loads here on Monday with Melbourne timber and proceeds to Greymouth to complete. The Kaimai, from Napier, is also still delayed in the roadstead with moderate prospects of berthing this evening to load on Monday for BlufrT Dunedin. Port Chalmers. Timaru, and Lyttelton. The Karepo, from Grey roadstead, is now off the bar here, presumably waiting to enter for bunkers. The Kartigi, with general cargo, is due from Auckland to load on Monday for Napier and Auckland. The Totara sailed from Wellington at 8 am. to-day and is due here to-morrow to load on Monday for Miramar. .
