PROSPERITY IN CANADA

BIG IMPROVEMENT IN 1936 INDUSTRIAL CENTRES MORE ACTIVE There are strong evidences in Canada of the passing of the depression, acording to statements contained in a letter from Mr H. F. Herbert, of Christchurch, who recently travelled through Canada on his way to Great Eritain. Mr Herbert remarks on the apparently thriving condition of the big industrial centres of Canada, which he visited on his trip, and the comparative lack of unemployment in these towns. "We heard stories of hardship and hard times in the past," states Mr Herbert, "but now there are strong evidences to be seen of the passing of the depression and the promise of better times ahead. Calgary and Winnipeg are surprisingly large centres of industry, grain and cattle, of course, being the chief interests. "Winnipeg's industrial pay roll increased by more than 1.300,000 dollars last year, and new jobs were found in this town for more than 1600 men during the last 12 months. Fifty-two new industries commenced operations and 61 new products were added to the established manufactures. The gross value of the output from the town increased by 20 per cent, during the same period." Mr Herbert states that the. improved conditions are noticeable throughout the whole country.
