They are making a drive in the Guadarrama mountains, capturing positions which hitherto were deemed to be impregnable. These include La Granja Cabez Grande, which was stormed by a mass assault against the rebel trenches, parapets, and, barbed wife. Dynamiters blasted a through the defences for the infantry.
DOMINION VIEWS STATED
MINISTERS’ CONFERENCE IN LONDON INSISTENCE ON AVOIDING ANY .... embroilment LONDON, June 1. instead of having to await dispatches or exchange views telegraphically, the Dominion Prime Ministers held a consultation with the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain), the Foreign Secretary (Mr R. A. Eden), and other members of the British ' Cabinet to-day, . and thus they were able to deal with the Spanish crisis on the spot. This morning’s meeting of the Im- ; perial Conference originally intended to continue the discussion on ■ foreign affairs and deal with the Far East, but the crisis has completely altered the situation. Mr Eden dealt entirely with Spain, explaining the latest situation and ' outlining the British representations. Each Dominion Prime Minister participated in the discussion. The Australian Associated Press understands that the Dominions’ delegates fully approved of Mr Eden’s emphasis of the necessity to regard the. situation calmly and his appeal to Herr Hitler not to make the , situation'graver. The morning’s discussions pro- ’ vided a further opportunity for the Dominions’ representatives to indicate in the plainest words their insistence that England and the Domiiyons must at all costs strive not , to be embroiled by such incidents which are not Empire 'affairs. Nothing has emerged more clearly fr,om the conference than the Dominions’ unanimity on this matter , which has ( been persistently expressed with the greatest forcefulness by every Prime Minister. In the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary again: referred to the situation arising from the bombing of the Deutschland, when he expressed regret at the withdrawal of ' the German and Italian naval patrols . from the Spanish coast. Mr Eden gave an assurance that ‘ the British Government would continue to do its utmost to prevent any aggravation of the present situation. It was in constant touch with other Governments on the subject with a view to considering what steps could most usefully be taken to restore the situation. I / ALMERIA A DESERTED CITY POPULATION RETREAT TO THE FIELDS ' (Received June 2, 9 p.m.) LONDON, June 1. The Almeria correspondent of “The Times” says the city is deserted and ruined. Almost the en- . tire population has fled to the countryside, where the fields are full of Weary, famished people. Details of the attack show that / the German squadron placed itself broadside to the city and fired continuously for half an hour. The bombardment was then resumed for JO minutes with two-minute salvoes from the Admiral Scheer and the destroyers Leopard, Luchs, Wolf, :: ®hd Panther.
