RUGBY FOOTBALL

ALL BLACK TRIAL GAMES EXTENSION OF TIME FOR NOMINATIONS RESPONSE TO REQUEST FROM CANTERBURY Responding to a request from the Canterbury Union, the New Zealand Rugby Union has decided to extend the closing date of nominations for the North Island and South Island trial teams until June 15. The new date is a week later than that originally chosen. The decision was notified to the meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Union last night. The extension of the date will allow the form shown in the representative matches against the West Coast and Buller next week to be taken into account in the Canterbury selection. The New Zealand Union further advised that the Springboks would arrive in the city, in preparation for the test match on September 4, at 7 p.m on September 2, from Timaru. The Albion Club wrote enquiring the fate of a recommendation from the club put forward at the annual meeting of delegates, that men who had represented the province more than 25 times should be given free passes to Lancaster Park. After some discussion it was decided to advise the club that the union was seeking information from other unions about the procedure followed in other centres. It was reported that the representative team which would play Buller at Westnort on June 12 would return to Greymouth and catch the train for Christchurch the same night, and it was decided to try to arrange sleeping berths for the players, on the night trip. SPRINGBOKS' TOUR

MATCHES IN AUSTRALIA KEEN INTEREST AROUSED The selection of an Australian team to meet the Springboks in the first test match at Sydney on June 26 is arousing keen interest in that country. Already this season four inter-state matches have been played—two in Brisbane and two in Sydney—and as a result of these games it is thought that although the state teams are not likely to defeat the Springboks, the test teams will provide stiff opposition. The Australian team for the first test will be announced after the match between the Springboks and New South Wales on June 19, and it is expected that many new players will be included. The performances of two players in the inter-state games—L. Walker, the Queensland full-oack, and J. McShane, wno played naif-back for New South Wales—have greatly impressed the selectors. Walker, who is 23 years old, is a brilliant defensive player and his fielding, running and kicking have been beyond reproach in the games played this season, it is not likely, if he is chosen for the tests, that he will be overshadowed by the South African full-back, Brand, who is regarded as one of the finest footballers produced by that country. McShane went to Oxford from Sydney University as a Rhodes Scholar in 1933. He is a strong, polished player, and a worthy successor to Malcolm. Altnough Cyril Towers, who is well known in New Zealand, is 30 years old, he is still considerea one ot the best centre threequarters in Australia, and should be included in the test team for his defence alone. Although it is considered too early yet to pick the forwards for the team for the first test, it is thought probable that the back line will comprise the following players:—Full-bacK, L. Walker (Queensland); three-quarters, J. D. Kelaher (New South Wales), C. H. Towers (New South Wales), E. S. Hayes (Queensland), J. Howard (Queensland); fiveeighths, P. Collins (New South Wales) or V. Richards (New South Wales); halfback, J. McShane (New South Wales).

RUGBY LEAGUE

FIXTURES FOR THIS SEASON NOTES ON SATURDAY'S PLAY [By AVON.] The season of interprovincial Rugby League will soon be here. First will be the annual excursion from Inangahua, on June 19. Canterbury's challenge for the Northern Union Cup has been sent to the New Zealand Council and the match will probably take place on the first Saturday in July. The West Coast League is the present holder, so the contest will take place at Greymouth. From this game Mr J. E. A. Amos. South Island selector, will choose his side for tl\e annual Inter-island came, to be played at Auckland towards the end of July. The New Zealand test sides against the Australians -win then be chosen. South Islanders included probably stopping in Auckland for intensive training. Sydenham's Improvement Sydenham's first match on its home ground, against Linwood on Saturday, will be long remembered by those present. Although Linwood played in orthodox style, the Sydenham side, especially the forwards, were very fast, spoiling rushes by the Linwood backs, making them lapse into error. Early over-eagerness lost tries to Sydenham, but in the second half the side's tactics definitely had Linwood in trouble and the scores were evened. Sydenham's pace, however, maintained throughout most of the game, but slackened towards the end. and the Linwood backs swept into action. They soon put the issue beyond doubt. Without R. Scott, who has been playing well, Sydenham's backs were not very effective, and showed lack of combination. F. Jones, hooker, had much more than his share of the ball in the scrums, often raking it in when his side was being pushed back off the ball. All the forwards were excellent in lose work. E. Wilson showing up more than his teammates. E. Grimes and V. Blackler were not missing from any hard work. E. Hamburger, back in his place after a long absence, was subdued. Whitley's Day Out Without R. Whitley, Linwood would have suffered defeat. He showed his speed when, in a thrilling race, he overhauled and tackled lc Compte when the Sydenham centre had broken away and seemed sure to score. In the second spell it was Whitley who broke Sydenham's attack by a series of brilliant runs, for which he made his own openings, thoroughly tiring the forwards just as they were beginning to ease up. L. Berry again impressed with his good handling and penetrative running. F. Ayres is still a good general, but his lack of fitness proves a handicap to him each Saturday. Why the Linwood forwards have slumped so far behind their backs is not easy to explain, but they definitely have lost their combination. H. Stevens is the best worker among them. Lessons from Visitors Canterbury Rugby League players can undoubtedly learn from visitors. The Wellington side, on Coronation Day, gave lessons in unorthodox passing, running from the scrum, and playing the ball. So far, these lessons have not been copied at Sydenham Park, but more useless "marks" have been seen this season than in the last two or three years, and many players would learn something by look- > ing up the "marking" rule. Waimairi Do Well Waimairi did very well to hold Addington to 10-9 in the first spell at the Papanui Domain on Saturday. The bustling tactics of the forwards, with the fine defensive work of D. Smith, the captain, were the contributing factors. The second spell, however, was A different tale, for the Addington backs showed their speed and combination and had no difficulty in penetrating the defence. The Waimairi forwards are good, but it is too much to expect forwards—good as they are—to stand up to the brilliant Addington thirteen without the assistance of a strong back line. For the winners, A. Geddes, who played at full-back—a new position for him—gave a sound display throughout. E. Briggs, in the forwards, is a tireless worker, and for his size plays a good, hard game. As the executive has decided to make improvements to Sydenham Park, the officials in charge of the ground at Papanui could follow suit in roping the playing area off, or seeing that the spectators are prevented from encroaching on the field. In the second spell of the Adding-ton-Waimairi game some of the spectators were more than 20 yards over the line.

ASSOCIATION

YOUNG AND KEEN CANTERBURY'S ELEVEN MATCH AGAINST ENGLISH TEAM A young and keen team has been chosen to represent Canterbury in the province's big match of the year—that against the visiting English side on June 9. If fitness and enthusiasm can do anything toward helping the home side to extend the formidable visitors, Canterbury should at least make a good showing. The selector relied mainly on the "old brigade" for the Jones Cup match against Otago— without the happiest results —yet the selection of such a young side for the forthcoming important game is a bold experiment. Close observers are confident it will be justified. The choice of two left halves for the wing-half positions does not necessarily mean that no right half is good enough. R. Henderson (Western) showed himself, against Thistle, a player of great capabilities, and must be considered very unlucky in not gaining a place in the team. M. Burnand, the outside left, did not impress against Otago, but good form at practice and subsequent showings in club games have impressed the selector. The inability of Westland and Buller representatives to travel to Christchurch deprives the team of some possible candidates, and so the side will be representative of Canterbury only. The curtain-raiser for the English match will be a game between Ashburton and Greymouth Technical Old Boys. It is to be hoped that the Westland nominees will be included in the Greymouth side, and so give the New Zealand selector's deputy a chance to see the men in action. At the interval in the big match the private schools' representatives will play the primary schools in a six-a-side match. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM ALTERED INCLUSION OF WESTLAND PLAYERS A request from the Westland-Buller Association that C. Crowe and R. Scott, of Westland, be included In the Canterbury representative team to play the English team at Lancaster Park on June 9 caused considerable discussion at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association last evening. Mr J. E. Jones presided. The secretary (Mr R. B. Bunt) said he had informed the Westland-Buller Association that he regretted the suggestion had been received too late, as arrangements had been completed for a Canterbury team to play. The team had been announced and advertising arrangements had been completed; but it was desirable that the strongest possible side should be fielded. It was finally decided to include the players. Before the international fixture a match between Ashburton and Greymouth Technical Old Boys will be played as a curtain-raiser. A. Wilson, of the Thistle Club, and A. McMillan, of the Western Club, were cautioned for misconduct during a match at English Park on Saturday, and it was decided that the clubs be written to about rough play during the game. W. H. Noonan of the Marist Club was censured for misconduct during a fourthgrade match with the Western Club. CANTERBURY CAPTAIN APPOINTED .S. Cawtheray was appointed captain of the Canterbury representative team to play the English team at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association last evening. The visitors will be accorded a cjvic reception in this city by the Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, next Tuesday, and on the following day will play a match with a combined team from Canterbury, Westland> and Buller, at Lancaster Park. During their stay in Christchurch several members of the side will visit some of the schools and will give short talks to the pupils. ENGLISH TEAM'S VISIT TO CHRISTCHURCH ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED To entertain the visiting English team during its stay in Christchurch, a committee was formed, and a programme was approved at a meeting of the Canterbury Football Association last evening. REPLACEMENT RULE COUNCIL'S DECISION (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON. June 1. The replacement rule recently adopted by the New Zealand Football Association is to apply to provincial, but not to test matches during the tour of the English amateur team. At a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Association tonight Mr Frank Campbell, vice-chairman, who presided, reported that a cablegram had been sent to the Football Association, London, urging that the replacement rule be agreed to. Mr C. Wreford Brown, one of the joint managers of the English team had received a reply from London agreeing to the suggestion in all except test matches. It was decided to advise all associations accordingly. Thirteen entries for the Chatham Cup have been received by the council as follows:—Canterbury, Western (holders), Nomads, Thistle; Wellington, Seatoun, Scottish, Wanderers, Marist Old Bovs, Petone; Southland, Thistle; Buller, Millerton All Blacks: Westland, Runanga; Otago, Northern; South Auckland, Hamilton Wanderers (provisional), Pukemiro.
