WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

SPOTSWOOD The monthly meeting of the Spotswood Women's Institute was held with Mrs A. W. Leaman presiding. Mrs Leaman welcomed several visitors from the Domett branch, also Mrs D. Parkes. foundation member, who is visiting the district. A reading was iven by Mis- Dallas Wilkinson, and a recitation by Mrs B. Buttle. Competitions resulted as follows: Fancy knitted-jumper: Mrs T. Stevenson 1. Misses M. and N. Harrison (equal) 2. Ginger cake: Miss M. Harrison 1. Mrs C. F. Barnes 2. Hostesses' competition: Mrs A. Hyde l.Mrs E. Clarke 2. An interesting demons'ration on cane st~ol ranking was given by Miss N. Harrison. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. C. Barnes. C. F. Barnes, N. Wilkinson, and Miss D. Wilkinson. COALGATE Mrs Johnston presided at the monthly meeting of the Coalgate Wo-rn-'Vs Institute, which was held in the Masonic Hall. Visitors were welcomed from Lake Coleridge. Glenroy, and Hawkins. It was decided to make a peggy square quilt to be sent to the Nurse Maude Association. Miss Hardie, a missionary from Punjab, India, gave an interesting address on life in India. Miss Hardie and Mrs Hart, of Lake Coleridge, judged the competitions, which resulted:—Prettiest cup and saucer: Mrs B. C. Rutherford 1. Mrs D. Pearson 2, Mrs E. Charles 3. Best bloom: Mrs B. Pearce 1, Mrs L. Clarke 2, Mrs D. Brown 3. During the social half-hour community singing was held, and a competition resulted in a tie between Mrs Black and Mrs Green. The hostesses were Mesdames Johnston, K. Marsh, and L. Clarke. WAIKARI The monthly meeting of the Waikari branch of the Women's Institute was held recently. In the absence of the president, the vice-president (Mrs L. Hook) presided. The North Canterbury Federation wrote offering prizes for the best banner made by institute members, and asking for nominations <or a group convener of the Hawarden group. Mrs A. Cowie, of The Peaks Institute, was nominated for this position. Mrs B. L. Blunden. assisted by Mrs Bassett. gave an interesting demonstration of Barbola work and exhibited some beautiful specimens! of completed work. The competitions, which were judged by Mrs Bassett, resulted:—Cushion cover, Mrs H. M. Carr 1, Mrs O. T. James 2. Sultana cake: Mrs D. Mowatt 1. Best bloom: Mrs Blunden 1. Mrs J. B. Page 2. Supper was served by the hostesses. Mesdames Blunden, R. I. Black, and S. L. Boon. DOMETT The monthly meeting of the Domett Women's Institute was held recently with Mrs A. M. Hyde presiding over a good attenda-:e members. Mrs T. Edridge gave an interesting talk on her recent travels abroard. Competitions for the afternoon were won by the following:—Chrysanthemums: Mrs H. Denton 1, Mrs P. Childs 2, Miss McAdam 3. Table centre: Mrs H. Denton 1, Miss R. McAdam 2, Miss N. Childs 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs P. Childs and Mrs C. Denton. '

LOBURN The May meeting of the Loburn Women's Institute was held in the Coronation Hall. Mrs J. W. Macleod presided. The meeting was held as an open afternoon, and about 33 visitors attended. Mrs Ross Macdonald exhibited arts and crafts and Mrs P. M. Merry snowed many varieties of thrift articles The winners of the monthly competitions were:—Premier bloom: Mrs J. Henry 1. Miss A. Waters 2, Mrs F. Robertson 3. Jar of flowers: Miss A. Waters 1. Mrs J. Henry 2, Mrs F. Robertson 3. Prettiest supper-cloth: Mrs J. W. Macleod 1. Mrs J. Henry and Mrs C. J. Baker, equal 2, Mrs Crooks and Mrs Sampson, equal 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Miss O. Croft and Mrs Crooks.
