WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH Mrs J. D. Hall presided at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Two new members were welcomed. Owing to the Christchurch branch, in conjunction with the Halswell branch, visiting the Chinese exhibition at the Art Gallery, only a short meeting was held. Mrs Box gave a resume of the provincial meeting held earlier in the month, and this concluded the afternoon’s programme. SWANNANOA BRANCH Mrs Burgin presided at the monthly meeting of the Swannanoa branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. There was a good attendance, and much interest was taken in the demonstration of basketmaking which was given by Mrs J. A. Mackenzie (Fernside). It was decided to hold the birthday party next month, and arrangements will be made at the next meeting. A competition for soup plate gardens was won by Mrs J. Bloxham, with Miss R. Winter second. The hostesses were Mrs Dixon and Miss Egan. BELFAST BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Belfast branch o'f the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the library, where Mrs T. Morton presided over a large attendance. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs A. W. Crawford, whose husband had met with a serious accident. Mrs Jones gave a demonstration on the making of wood pulp flowers, and Mrs Low also gave a useful demonstration. The competition for the best decorated tumbler resulted as follows: — Mrs E. Hillier 1. Mrs D. C. McArthur 2, For the best bloom: Miss Myra Morton 1, Mrs S. G. Farquhar 2. 1 Hostesses were Mrs E. Harris, Mrs R. S. Halligan, Mrs H. Weeber. DARFIELD There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Durfleid branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mrs A. A. Stott (president) presided. It was decided to make a grant of ill Is to the King George V Memorial Fund. Mrs A. T. Beatty gave an interesting demonstration on stool making. The following competitions resulted;— Egg cake. Miss R. Thompson 1, Miss K. Duncan and Mrs C. Price (equal) 2, Mrs L. Fox 3; best bloom, Mrs W. Syrne 1, Mrs C. Price 2, Mrs H. H. Reed 3; CHORLTON-LITTLE AKALOA BRANCH The May meeting was held in the library, Litlo Akaloa. In the absence of the president (Mrs Douglas Waghorn), Mrs R. E. Waghorn presided over a fair attendance. It was-unani-mously decided to send letters of congratulation to Mrs Ward, a former Dominion president, and Mrs Wilson present Dominion president, on the Coronation honours conferred on them. In order to obtain funds for the King George V Memorial Fund, a social evening was' arranged. The winners of the competitions were as follows: Blindfold apple peeling: Mrs Salt 1, Mrs V. Craw and Mrs L. Craw 2. Ringing the bottle: Miss Kathleen Craw 1. The roll call, “My funniest experience,” brought forth some funny stories. Next month’s competitions are "best bloom” and "three largest vegetables from own garden,” and the roll call “verse of creed that appeals most.” The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Bailey and L. Craw. GREENPARK BRANCH Mrs H. Harris presided at the monthly meeting of the Greenpark branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. It was decided to hold a social and dance next month, to celebrate the second birthday of the branch. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames P. J. Dulieu and Watkins. Competitions, judged by Mrs Dempsey, were won as follows: Best bloom, Mrs L. R. Dulieu 1, Mrs P. J. Dulieu 2, Mrs Ablett 3; plate of pikelets, Mrs Watkins 1, Mrs Ablett 2, Mrs L. Dulieu 3; embroidered apron, Mrs N. Bearman 1, Mrs L. Dulieu 2, and Mrs Harris 3. KAIKOURA The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held with Mrs R. Hugonin (president) presiding. The housekeeper’s scheme was fully discussed, two applicants being placed in suitable positions. A letter was received from Mr G. Lewis (Christchurch) stating that he would be pleased to accept the position as judge at the bulb section at the division’s spring flower show. During the afternoon Mrs C. W. Lee (secretary) presented Mrs Hugonin (the president) with a bouquet of autumn-tinted flowers and fern, and to Misses F. and R. Bullen a posy and shoulder spray, and wished them a pleasant and enjoyable trip abroad. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Mackle and T. Lane. MEAD BRANCH Mrs A. Burns presided at the monthly meeting of the Mead branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. After the business session, Mrs Burns presented a crystal vasb to Mrs Hornsby, who will shortly leave the district. The results of the competitions were: Best bloom. Mrs J. Shannon 1, Miss Shellock 2; handkerchief from a salt bag, Mrs F. Breading 1, Mrs R, Weaver and Mrs A. Burns (equal) 2; jar of jelly, Mrs L. R. Weaver 1, and Mrs J. Shannon 2. Members were entertained by the schoolchildren, who gave an enjoyable concert. LYNDON-WAIAU JUNIOR BRANCH The annual meeting of the LyndonWaiau junior branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the library hall, with Miss M. Savage presiding. The following officers were elected: —President, Miss Margaret Smale; vice-presidents. Misses N. White and B. Smale; secretary and treasurer, Miss B. Smale; committee, Misses N. White, M. Savage. M. Smale, M. Oldman, W. Savage, M. McKie, H. Powis, and B. Smale. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit of £5 8s Bd. was adopted, Mrs G. White again gave a cup to be competed for each month. Mrs Reid judged the competition for the best passe partout picture, the winners being Miss M. Savage and Miss M. Oldman (equal) 1, Miss W. Savage 3. It was decided that the competition for the next meeting should be the best knitted garment, and the roll call “My favourite motto.” The hostesses were Misses N. .White, M. McKie, and B. - ii
