RICCARTON RATING
20 THE bditob of tub press. Sir, —As a ratepayer in the Riccarton borough I marvel at the apathy of Riccarton ratepayers generally. A few years ago we used to be told our rates were below those of the city. Last year the Riccarton borough levied a general rate 25 per cent, higher than that struck by the city, viz.. 3d m the £ on unimproved value on 75 per cent, of valuation in the city and 3d in the £ on 100 per cent, in Riccarton: our electric current charges are roundly one-third higher than for the same consumption of electricity in the city. l besides the valuable concession to those who have not electric cooking of 20 per cent, off cost of range and free wiring; our fire insurance premiums are higher in view of the fact that we have no water or real fire protection. The above is surely too high a price to pay for our Mayor and councillors desiring to be big men in a little community rather than little men in a bi| community. I do hope the Hon. W. E. Parry expedites his amalgamation proposals. That seems the only way we shall secure relief from the present absurd position.—Yours, etc., ELIZABETH STREET. May 1937.
