CASH PURCHASE SCHEME NOT FAVOURED

I WAIMATE RETURNED SOLDIERS* DECISION A decision against the adoption of a cash purchase scheme for its members was reached at the annual meet-: ing of the Waimate branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association on Wednesday evening. Mr G. H. O. Barclay presided. The retiring president (Mr M. J. Friel) explained that Mr R. A. Waring had canvassed the businessmen 01 Waimate, and had compiled a list of the discounts which some firms had promised. Mr Waring's work was greatly appreciated by the executive, but it was doubtful if it-was worth while pursuing the scheme. He had heard many opinions that the scheme was going a little too far, especially as the association had received a lot of help from the public in various other ways recently. Mr H. C. Johnston gave some details of a similar scheme he had helped to organise in Dunedin. From his experience there, he said he did not favour the adoption of such a scheme in a small town. The meeting decided to shelve the proposal. The hospital benefit scheme for returned soldiers, put forward by the Dannevirke branch of the association, was briefly discussed, but was deferred to a later meeting, as full particulars were not available. Mr Friel explained that at first it had been proposed to institute the scheme for men up to the age of 45, which would hardly have made it worth consideration, as most returned soldiers were at least 45. Recently, however, advice had been received that it was intended to cover men of any age. It was also intended to discuss a local scheme with the steward of the Waimate Public Hospital. PERSONAL ITEMS FROM GERALDINE Mr G. E. Gudgeon, who has been relieving as manager of the Bank, of New Zealand at Geraldine, returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mr A. C. McMillan, of the relieving staff of the bank, will act as manager until the return of Mr J. D. McKechnie toward the end of June. Miss Mary Barker, Winchester Crossing, Orari, has left for England.
