CITY FIREMEN'S DISPUTE

♦ ] WORKING CONDITIONS FIXED Conditions of work for the Christchurch Fire Bpard's firemen were agreed upon by workers, and the board's representatives yesterday after two days in Conciliation Council. Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, presided. Mr Ritchie, in congratulating the parties on the agreement reached, said he was satisfied that the full investigation into conditions which had been made would make for more efficiency in the brigade, and a better understanding between the men and the board. Agreement on hours df work and other important points was reached on the first day. Yesterday agreement was reached oh wages as follows: Probationary firemen, £3 17s a week; third class firemen, £4 Is; second class firemen, £4 ss; first class firemen, £4 14s 6d; senior firemen, £4 10s; firemen motor-mechanics. • It was agreed that 2s 6d a week should be added to the wages of firemen drivers and carpenters. Provision was made for the payment of an allowance of £1 a week to married first-class or higher ranked, firemen not provided with quarters! and that a fire allowance should be paid to the married men provided with quarters.
