Commercial Bank of Australia preference were firm at £9 9s. market closing 6d either way. New Zealand Refrigerating, 10s paid, were Arm with sellers and business at 8s lOd. North Canterbury Freezing were firmer with dealings at 37s 6d and 38s 9d, and further buyers at 37s 6d, sellers at 41s. New Zealand Breweries rose to 64s lOd, 65s 7Jd, and 665, and more were offered at 67s 6d, buyers at 655. Staples Brewery were firm at 52s 6d. Tooth's Brewery had business at 55s 7d. Miscellaneous Anthony Hordern, ex dividend, were dealt in at 19s. closing quotations Id on either side. Australian Glass were firmer at 93s 6d. and 935. British Tobaccos were Weaker "with sellers and business at 49s 6d. Broken Hill Proprietary contributing dropped to 74s lid —the fully paid were weaker with sellers at Bls 6d. 'Colonial Sugars, ex dividend, were firmer on buyers' off ars £46 10s. Dunlop Perdriau Rubbers mcved up Id to 21s Id, and more were wanted at that price. Electrolytic Zinc Ordinary declined to 56s 6d and 56s 3d and these were sellers' and buyers' closing auotations respectively—the preference fell to 57s sd. G. J. Coles relapsed to £5 7s. and there were further buyers at that figure. General Industries appeared easier at 20s 6d, market closing 2d either way. Morts Dock were fractionally weaker at 12s sd. A late sale of New Zealand Drugs en Wednesday was reported at 745. Shillings, Limited, were fractionally firmer at 19s 3d—a late sale on Wednesday was reported at the same price. Taranaki Oil were firm at 4s Bd. Mining Maori Gully changed hands at 5Jd and 5Jd. Nemoha were firm at Is 7d, closing quotations 2d on either side. Eroken Hill South were weaker with sellers ahd business at 50s 6d. Mount Lyells had dealings at 45s 6d to 433 9d. Mount Morgans were easier at 13s 5d and 13s 4d, and these were sellers' and buyers' closing quotations respectively. Rawang Tin were fractionally weaker at lis Bd, market closing Id either way. Unlisted Stocks Grey River, 3s 9d paid, were firm with buyers and dealings at 4s 6d. The continued weakness of most shares reveals that the city's hostility to the defence contribution is unabated. _. Sir Robert Home, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer, voiced the discontent in a scathing statement declaring that if a malevolent spirit desired to tempt British industry back to its old sluggish ways, it could scarcely have conceived a more insidious device ttian the defence contribution, which had singled out for exceptional taxatidn the growth of business.
