HOSPITAL BOARD SECRETARY
TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT MADE Mr W. A. W. Gudgeon, accountant to the North Canterbury Hospital Board, has been appointed to take over the secretaryship of the board on trial at the retirement in December of the present secretary, Mr W- S. Wharton. The finance committee of the board recommended to a meeting yesterday that the position of secretary should be advertised, but several members objected to the proposal, holding that if a suitable officer was offering within the board's own staff, he should have the appointment. Much of the discussion was taken in committee, and it was later reported that Mr Gudgeon had been appointed to take over fh p secretaryship on trial for six months after Mr Wharton's retirement. In the meantime Mr Gudgeon will become assistant secretary. He has been for 17 years accountant to the board. Mr Gudgeon has had a distinguished war record, winning the Military Cross. He served with the 11th Battalion, Western Australian Regiment, on Gallipoli, and in France and Belgium. Enlisting as a private, he was an act-ing-captain at the Armistice. He was born in Blenheim. Before the war he. .was employed in a bank in Australia.
