ROAD SAFEST Pedestrians' Need for Care
Comments on the problem of road safety in England, where traffic is very heavy, were made in a report this week by Sir Philip Game, formerly Governor of New South. Wales,, who is now Commissioner of Metropolitan Police in London. He said that it was necessary to discover, how to improve the "road sense" of all classes of road users, including pedestrians, as well as their care ami consideration for others. An analysis of accidents in which persons were killed or injured during six months of last year showed that three-quarters of the pedestrians injured were themselves mainly responsible for the accidents in which they were hurt. Injury or death was often the penalty for carelessness in crossing roads. Resignation of Mr Baldwin Sir Stanley Baldwin's retirement from the office of Prime Minister of Great Britain is expected in Britain to-morrow. He will most likely become Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, and he may visit Australia next year. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain) has been named as Mr Baldwin's successor as Prime Minister. Spanish Children in England When the Spanish liner Habana docked In Southampton, England, on Sunday morning, 4000 refugee children from Spain disembarked. Nearly all were hatless, and had only the clothes they were wearing. New clothes were given to them in England. Japanese Cruiser at Kiel For the first time in 30 years a Japanese warship is visiting Germany. The ship is the cruiser Ashigara, which had been in England for the Coronation. Herr Hitler received Rear-Admiral Kobayashi on Tuesday. King and Queen to Attend the Derby It is announced that Their Majesties will watch the Derby on June 2, and that the King will revive his father's custom of entertaining members of the Jockey Club at a dinner at Buckingham Palace on Derby night. Cargo of Live Snakes A dust-begrimed car and trailer with TOO live snakes aboard stalled in the heart of Sydney on Monday. The snakes had been caught by a professional snake-catcher, Rudolph Dehaume, aged 27, in the "back country of New South Wales and Central Australia. He explained that the snakes were mostly for shipment to London and Continental zoos. Payment for them will be made at so much "per foot." London Telephone Calls Londoners are at present making nearly 23,000,000 telephone calls a week, an/acrease of about 3,000,000 compared with a year ago. New Gliding Record *m.
