A Candid Record Breaker
Mr H. F. Broadbent has rendered a distinguished service to aviation by breaking the record for a solo flight from Australia to England and then proclaiming that his achievement is "silly" and that he "would not do it again '* for worlds." Mr Broadbent adds, what everyone, has suspected for a long time, that such flights are " uncomfortable, dangerous, and no " use to anyone." A few years ago, when there
were still doubts in the public mind about the pc isibilities of long-distance flying, the men and women who risked their lives in flights across -the Atlantic and spectacular dashes between England and Australia were performing a valuable service. But that stage is past; and those who deliberately risk their lives do more harm than good to aviation. Fortunately there are now signs that the game is played out. Long-distance records are ceasing to be firstclass news, with the result that there is now little money or glory to be won by breaking them. It must be hoped that Mr Broadbent's frankness will be the final blow to a form of enterprise which is nothing more than a wasteful misdirection of effort and expense.
