"In common with all industrial concerns the management has been somewhat anxious during the past months at the continual rising of production costs—the natural sequel to the new industrial conditions,” states Mr W. J. Stone, engineer and manager of the Wanganui City Council’s Municipal Gas Department, in his annual report for the year ended March 31. “If it were possible to increase the revenue to keep pace with the increasing manufacturing costs, there would be little cause for concern,” continues the report. “However, the result of the upward trend can only be awaited. It may be found later that it will be necessary to increase prices, as some gas undertakings have already been forced to do.” A severe effect on the year’s work because of the infantile paralysis, epidemic is anticipated at the Fendalton open-air school, according to the report submitted at the annual meeting of householders last evening. The report stated that the first term had been most unfortunate. A case of paralysis had made it necessary to close one class, and 70 pupils were quarantined for 10 days. Besides this, many parents of children who were not “contacts” elected to keep; their children away, and during the last 10 days there had been, on an average, 170 pupils absent from the school. This would have a very severe effect on the year’s work, in spite of the correspondence work which had been instituted for the quarantined pupils.
