HOME ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION
Subjects of popular interest to women were chosen for the short talks given by experts at a meeting of the Home Economics Association, held last night in the 'Navy League Hall. That the attendance was, not affected by. the, ram indicated that members take a keen interest in the meetings, and on this occasion they were specially interested in last minute, arrangements for the Coronation exhibition, one of the largest ventures to be made by the association. ■ , ',.. Miss B. Wilson in her talk on the care of the feet, gave many helpful suggestions for the strengthening of muscles and demonstrations were given of exercises necessary for stretching the tendons of the feet to bring the cushion of the-sole, in line with the arch. The speaker pointed out that a change of occupation often had some effect on the muscles of the legs, especially when there was much standing to be done. Miss Wilson explained the damage that short shoes could do to the feet, and how a baby's foot could be moulded wrongly because of tight bootees. Many mothers did riot realise that bootees might shrink in the wash, and she urged her hearers to discard them as soon as they showed the slightest degree of tightness. • Mr D. H. Beattie. spoke of "The Care of the Hair and Skin." and said he could not condemn too strongly the common use of other people's combs and brushes, for this was one of the surest ways of contracting infections of the scalp. The scalp should be washed and massaged thoroughly to increase circulation and thus promote hair growth and health. Brushing the. hair twice a day was as good as a tonic. Some of the causes of baldness in men were the hats they wore which did not allow the air to penetrate* to their heads, and the common practice, especially amongst young men, of plastering the hair with various lotions to keep it in place. A healthy scalp must set air and light, said the speaker.
