WORLD EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHS

PRINTS FROM MANY LANDS

The high pitch of perfection reached in the photographer's art all over the world is shown well in the International Exhibition of Pictorial P™»»igraphy which is now on view at the DIC. There are about 170 prints, representative of the work of artists of more than 30 countries of the world. The prints are from the Western international Photographic Salon*, Bristol, and the exhibition, which has already been shown in Auckland and Wellington, is the most important ot its kind ever shown in New Zealand. There is a very wide variety of subject and technique, and the pictures on view are more than ordinary photographs which are largely records of events and incidents. They have all - been selected by competent" judges, and every "print displays artistic feeling and execution. It is this artistic approach which causes the salon to claim that photographs of such a nature are works of art, and to consider them in that light. ' Although most of the photographs are from English and American artists, there is a small, but select, New Zealand section. The studies are "Shadow Dancer," by G. B. Jones, "Design," by D. P. Lyons, "Blacksmith.* by H. J. Schmidt, "Decoration," by R. M. Gillingham, all of Auckland, and "Profile," by H. E. Gaze, of Hamilton. There is a notable representation of European countries, of India, China, and Japan, and of the British Dominions. All types of subjects are represented, including figures and profiles. land and seascapes, still life and industrial and miscellaneous topics. The exhibition will remain in Christchurch for about a fortnight before it goes on to Dunedin and other southern centres.
