"IF I WERE MAYOR"

Plans for Coronation Day LARGE NUMBER OF CANDIDATES AND MUCH INTEREST

Our candidates are making plans for Coronation Day. Their ideas are good, too. Candidate Maurice Colin Sexton, for instance, suggests a children's pageant, and Candidate 'Mate Ballast has mapped out a definite and clear-cut programme. Those members who'have sent in their letters, but have not mentioned Coronation preparations, are invited to write again, stating just what their plans are for this great day.

Celebrations at Hanmer •Mate Ballast, Hanmer Springs, draws «P a splendid programme of events for Coronation Day in that district. Her ideas, are so good that grown-up Mayors will probably want to try them. H I were Mayor of Hanmer, and j •were elected at Coronation- period, I should like to start a carnival lading over three days to cele-. brate the great occasion. The first day. I think, would be May 11. The following is the programme I have made, and think suitable for execution. Of course my councillors I

would in all probability wish to make some slight alterations. May 11.—A gymkhana held in the domain. A large variety of animal

May 12.—A combined church service in public grounds, at 11 a.m. The oldest resident to plant a tree in the domain to commemorate the occasion. At 2 p.m. the Coronation procession would start, after which the vehicles would be judged, in the evening a Coronation ball, at which the King and Queen wetfe present with their retinue ■■ (the king and queen to be voted for a short time beforehand). , May 13, 9.15 a.m..—My wife and I would visit and inspect the school

children and their work, etc. A drive up the Lewis Pass road starting at 10.45 a.m. would be next. At the end of the road sports would be held. A few comical events would add to the fun. In the evening a concert could be held, after which the prizes won during the carnival would be presented. The above are my plans for celebrating the Coronation of -King George VI and Queen Elizabeth 11. "Long live the King and Queen. —'MATE BALLAST, Hanmer Springs.

Would Stage a Children's Pageant

If I were Mayor of Christchurch, The streets would all be gay; Decked in flags and bunting bright, For Coronation Day. If I were Mayor of Christchurch, The flags red, white, and blue, Would mingle with Venetian masts, And coloured light bulbs, too. If I were Mayor of Christchurch, The boys, as soldiers bold, Would march around Cathedral square, With banners, as of old.

If I were Mayor of Christchurch, Dressed as King and Queen, A girl and boy in carriage gold, Would in the Square be seen. If I were Mayor of Christchurch, I'd have a grand display, Of British goods, in all the shops, For Coronation Day. . —MAURICE COLIN SEXTON (aged 11). M.G., L.8.H., P.8.H., Timaru,

Cyclists, Beware!

If I were Mayor of Christchurch these are a few of the |hings I would do. .. '. T I would have a white line down through the Square, and have one side marked "Motorists" in big red letters, and the other side marked "Cyclists." I would do my best to stop young cyclists from cutting across closely

riding in front of motors, and also against those who hold on to the backs of other vehicles. ' I think that all cyclists should be provided with lamps, locks, and rear lamps. ; . If these reforms were earned, out I am sure that Christchurch would be a much happier and a safer place. —JUNE HILL, L.8.H., Churchill street. Some Good Suggestions If I were Mayor of Christchurch I would draw up a way of providing for the poor by holding a competition, each company or society representing a certain person, thuj gathering money to give to distressed areas. I would have special gardens for native shrubs and trees, and a sanctuary for native birds. Another thing I would like to do would be to help the Maori settlements near Christchurch, and t 9

encourage the Maori people to carry on their ancient customs and poi and haka dances, and to cultivate their language. - • . I would also raise funds for the ' continuation of the building of the —'MATE PORANUI, A.P.S., A.8.H.. A. 8., Te Waipounamu. For the Children If I were Mayor of a big city I would see that everything was in good order and clean and tidy. Sometimes I would have beach competitions for the children, and 1

would present a prize for. the best sand castle. ;_ On special occasions I would hold big parties, and show visitors or well-known people round the town. On May 12, the Coronation Day of King George VI. I would decorate the streets with ribbons and flags, stretched, from one side of the street to the other. I would put a wide, blue ribbon with "God Save the King" in big gold letters. The procession would march under this and on into other streets. I think it would be quite amusing to be Mayor, only it would be a very responsible position. —AUDREY DEANS (aged 11), 8.8. H., P.8.H., A. 8., . "Kilmarnoch.

SCHOOL BELLS

The bell is ringing, For school to begin, The children are trooping ' All merrily in. —'MATE SEAFOAM. ' >• Afehburtoa,
