MANY DEATHS

VITAL STATISTICS FOR APRIL BIG INCREASE IN BIRTHS April maintains the record that has been set this year for numerous deaths in the city, and according to records of the Christchurch Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, the total number of deaths for the four months of this year, 457, is higher than those for the corresponding period of any year since 1921. The monthly return of vital statistics from this office shows, however, a big increase in the number of births as compared with April, 1936. The comparative figures are as follows: April, April, 1937. 1936. Births ... ..225 171 Deaths .. ..118 95 Marriage notices ... 131 158 Marriages in office 22 30 The marriage figures cannot satisfactorily be compared, because last year Easter fell in April, whereas this year it was in March.
