TURF GOSSIP

A Change in the Weather Light rain set in at Oamaru yesterday afternoon, and it continued into the eyenlng. The indications last night -were not for any heavy falls, but prospects for to-day's laces did not look at all bright., It would take a good deal of rain to affect the track to any extent, but with a Continuance of last night's conditions, the surface will be very slippery, and will no doubt upset ideas based on the first day's form. Will Carry Support Salient Knight was not produced in Thursday's maiden event at Oamaru, but is to start to-day, and will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. He is certain to dispute the favouritism with Vola Dale, who beat him for second place to Irish Piddle at Washdyke last week. Salient Knight, ■by Night Raid, is trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke, whose stable will also be represented In the race by Coalpit, a five-year-old mare, by Cockpit ' from Gold Bound, who will carry Wino's fcolours. Coalpit ran a good race at Washdyke, but is hardly up to to-day's class. From Mantua An interesting contestant in the Novice Stakes at Oamaru to-day is Valantua, a three-year-old gelding by Valkyrian from Mantua, and thus a half-sister to the New Zealand Cup winner, Palantua, who claimed Falacun as her sire. Like the latter, Valantua wiljl represent Mrs W. Mackenzie, of Dunedin. '. . Looks Likely Mi»clo'is to fulfil his engagement in the Pukeuri High-weight at Oamaru to-#fc. and will be ridden by R. Beale. Tme. combination will no doubt carry strong support. In Miracle's absence from the Farewell Handicap, Silver Slipper, Hanlon,. and Balmenter make most appeal. A Hospital Case Cyrillian is. at present under treatmerit at the Eiderslie Stud, and is likely to remain there for a good while before it will be possible to send her home. Enjoyable' Afternoon As guests of the Oamaru Jockey Club, about 100 visitors to this week's meeting were entertained'by a visit to the Eiderslie stud yesterday. The managing director (Mr K. Austin* arranged for a parade of sires, mares and foals, and young stock, and gave interesting information about each lot. The stud paddocks and all the stock are. looking exceptionally well just now, and the opportunity given to ,tne majority of those present to pay their first visit to Eiderslie was'much appreciated. The assemblage was later entertained at afternoon tea in the picturesque grounds fronting the old homestead.

In this issue the Railway Department, advertises cheap day excursion fares' and train arrangements for the Amfcerley races, at Greney's road, next Saturday.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders A payment for the New Zealand Derby will fall due to-day at noon. Acceptances for the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting will close on Monday. Oamaru Trotting Club The handicaps declared by Mr George Paul for the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday next have awakened a fresh interest in the fixture, which promises to be one of the most successful held at this period of the year. With the exception of the principal event, the President's Handicap, the fields are well above the average in numbers and quality is well represented. For a prize of £375 the President's Handicap has not filled as well as might have been expected, but nine good pacers are plenty to provide the best class of race. By his good consistent racing during the season and an especially fine performance in the All Aged Stakes at Ashburton, Lucky Jack richly deserves the honour of first favourite, and only 36 yards behind the limit horses he should be prominent all through the race. Consistent and brilliant. Lucky Jack is an especially fine four-year-old. The unhoppled trotter, Sea Gift, has already proved her superiority, over some of the best pacers, and the" grass track at Oamaru will suit her admirably. She is sure to run a good race. Rocks Ahead must be taken on trust, for while she has shown extreme speed and stamina on occasions, her public efforts in Canterbury have not been very impressive. Big Author appears to be a horse of moods and does not always begin correctly, but this failing may not affect his chances in a small field. He can stay two miles with the best pacers in commission. Pot Luck at one time looked a champion in the making, but, while he is a brilliant sprinter, he has not always run his races out like a real stayer. Yet with a race run to suit" him he can sprint very fast over the last furlong of a two miles race. Morello is a gelding of distinct possibilities and his effort in the Timaru Cup in March suggested him as likely to develop into a good stayer. He should do better than the other limit horses, Francis Lincoln, Marie Celeste, and Young Frank. The chances of Lucky Jack will be most favourably considered and Pot Luck and Sea Gift will be other popular fancies. Unhoppled Trotters Native Huon will have an opportunity of winning her second race at the Oamaru meeting, for she is handily placed on 48 yards behind in the Innovation Handicap of a mile and a half, and is on the limit of the Waikaura Handicap of a mile and five furlongs. She is a very solid trotter and her victory at the recent Ashburton meeting was gained in approved style. She registered 3min 34sec and still figures on a 3min 45sec mark, so she has something to come and go on. In this race, however, is Pilot Peter, who lost a lot of ground at Ashburton and later gave a sensational display of trotting. He will only need to move off correctly to take a hand in the finish of any race he may start in. Starwyn's Prospects The American pacer, Starwyn, is due to make his next appearance in the Papakaio Handicap at Oamaru, and from the limit of a 2min 55sec class he is bound to be a popular fancy. This colt is on the improve, and is expected to develop into a high-grade pacer. He has speed and stays on well, while there is no question about his gameness. A Disappointing Trotter At one time Guy Hugo looked like developing into a good class trotter, but his latest displays have been far from impressive.' His running suggests that he has not been at his best; but he has only to strike his correct form to win races., He will be next engaged at Oamaru. At Least Useful Donor, trained by A. Fairbairn, has shown a general improvement in his recent racing, and he should be well supported in his engagement in the Teviotdale Handicap at Amberley next Saturday. He is not oposed by good, class horses. Returned to Owners Minneapolis, the two-year-old sister to Indianapolis, who was sent from Durbar Lodge to F. C. Dunlevy to be given a final preparation for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, will probably be sent back to Ashburton within the course of the next few day& This quality-looking filly has plenty of speed which she does not carry very far.

Sporting Song's Success Although only seven started in the Mangatera Steeplechase, it was an excellent race,, with an exciting anish. Given made most of the pace, and, entering the last circuit, drew clear. Lord Hereford and Petrarch set after him first, but Petrarch was beaten five furlongs from home, and Lord Hereford ran off at the second last fence. Rioghail and Sporting Song, who had been in the rear during most Of the running, then came forward, and Sporting Song had a slight advantage at the last fence. He appeared to be winning easily, but at the finish he had to be shaken up to keep in front, while Rioghail Just caught Given on the post. Count Willonyx and Petrarch were next. The winner was a bit careful at some of his early fences, but he was going well over "the final stages. Rioghail and Given put good efforts, but Count Willonyx was rather disappointing. Petrarch went well while his condition lasted. Well-Placed Confidence Some solid money came for the Greenmeadows representative, Captain Furst. in the maiden, and it proved well-placed confidence, for he ran to the front at the half mile from a bunch of about half a dozen good beginners, and on the turn was three or four lengths clear of Aria, Glenthawn, Fair Isle, Vadanoe, and Notice. Vadanoe finished resolutely in the straight, but he had no chance of reaching the winner. Galteemore came from a long way back to take third place from Glenthawn, and then came Notice, Naughty Marietta and Master Hector. The winner has done very little racing. He is a chestnut three-year-old brother to Werohia. His owner-trainer does not do many meetings, but in the past he has been responsible for some good winners. Vadanoe, one of the useful Vaals tribe, was tlnlucky as he was slow away, and gave the winner a fair start. Galteemore was finishing well, and may yet come good. Aria showed early speed. Favourite Disappoints Mandamus was a firm favourite for the principal handicap, and after making all the running was beaten into third place. He was attended throughout by Werohia and Catalogue, from Hazoor, Gay Boy, and Pakanui, with Arctic King toward the rear. Mandamus led Werohia, Hazoor, and Catalogue into the straight, with Arctic King moving up on the outside very fast. Werohia and Mandamus were having a keen struggle at the distance, but Arctic King, finishing very resolutely, wore them down and won going away. Werohia beat Mandamus narrowly, and very close up were Catalogue, Hazoor, and Pakanui. Werohia got a perfect run and had every chance. Mandamus put up a good effort considering he made all the pace, and the time on the dead track was very fast. Catalogue, Hazoor, and Pakanui were all handy at the finish. Export Beats Royal Record Export won the hack sprint narrowly from Royal Record, after both had been fairly prominent in the running, but neither would have beaten Collision had latter got a good passage. He was sent back to the rear of the field at the end of two furlongs and then ran the dividend-payers to two lengths. War Lap was the favourite, but he never looked good, although he ran a fair race into seventh place. Blue Garter was slow away and so was Parakino. and both finished just behind the placed horses. A Narrow Win Lone Raider, making one of his infrequent appearances, won narrowly in the open sprint from Huntette. after the latter had endeavoured to win all the Way. Lone Raider's performance was up to his best, as he was last in all the early running. This pair finished clear of Red Manfred, who was always handy on the rails, and ran a creditable race. Hunting Lodge, Master Cyklon. and Lady Ina were well up, bunched. Diamond Cutter's Success Taro and the Jazz Boy—Top Hat bracket, the favourites for the Tahoraiti Hack, were prominent throughout, and ran good races, but they just failed to pay a dividend. The race was won by the Wel-lington-owned and Wairarapa-trained Diamond Cutter. He was always fairly handy and moving up on the leaders, Hunter's Morn and Race Call, in the straight he scored decisively from Race Call, who had Jazz Boy and Taro also coming at him in the finish. Even Money, Snorting • Gift, and Dorado were next. Steady rain was falling when they were at the post for this race, and the field gave trouble at the start. Diamond Cutter won well, but both Jazz Boy and Taro might improve with the race. Solid Pace Set Aube set a very solid pace in the last race, and although Corroboree ran up to him on the turn, the test in the heavy going was too severe and he fell back again in the straight. Here Tractile and Kentucky Song, who had been in behind the leader most of the way, drew forward, and after a good tussle Tractile finally asserted his superiority. Kentucky Song was clear of Le Grand, who began to figure prominently over the last halfmile, and then came Puroto. Trailer, and Corroboree. Tractile stuck just too well for Kentucky Song, who put up a creditable effort in her first attempt over a distance, and paid a good price for second place. Le Grand should improve with racing. Corroboree's task in heavy ground was beyond him. but he need not be condemned.
