The society previously raised the £2600required for the first section, and the £2OOO for the latest portion was given by the Carnegie Corporation. Although the building was only begun in 1935, already it contains many valuable exhibits, including collections given, by Lady McLean and the late Mr Greacen Black, of Gisborne, in addition to a Carnegie art library valued at £1250.
