MAN FATALLY SHOT

BODY FOUND IN CAR NEAR WAIKARI

The body of a young man. Mr Alick Edward Smith, aged 24, a teamster employed at the Templeton Mental Hospital farm, was discovered early yesterday morning, propped in a sitting position in the front seat of his "car. which was pulled up on the'side of the Lake Sumner road about 13 miles from Waikari. In his forehead was a wound caused apparently by a shot-gun discharge, and a shot-gun was lying between his knees. The discovery was made when a farmer of the district, Mr B. L. Hoben, pftssed along the road at about 7 o'clock. Noticing something amiss, Mr Hoben called a neighbour, and the police were informed. Evidence of identification only was heard,at the inquest held before the Coroner. Mr H. A. Young, at the Waikari Hospital yesterday afternoon, the inquest being adjourned to Christchurch to. .allow inquiries to be made and further evidence to be obtained. From evidence given by a fellow employee, Mr H. J. Stalker, yesterday, Smith worked on Wednesday afternoon. They had tea together. Smith apparently left later in the evening. Medical evidence placed the time of death in the early hours of the morning. ■* Smith had been married only 10 days.
