SUPPLY OF ELECTRIC POWER

AMURI AND CHEVIOT COUNTIES MINISTER’S REPLY TO BOARD The supply of electric power to the Amuri and Cheviot counties was again discussed by the North Canterbury Electric Power Board at its meeting in Rangiora yesterday. In answer to its requests for some relief from the annual rental of £450 for each of two sub-stations, one at Waipara and the other at Culverden, as proposed by the Public Works Department, the board received the following letter from the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple):— , _ ' . “When I was in North Canterbury at the end of last year, members of your board and others pointed out to me the need for an extended electricity supply in' the Amuri and Cheviot counties. I understood then that the chief difficulty was the construction of a main line from your present mam supply point at Southbrook to a suitable point in the northern part of your area about 50 miles distant. I now understand that the department has offered to erect a transmission line as far as Culverden and to install the necessary sub-stations at a cost, of about £30,000, provided that your board takes power on the department s ordinary conditions of supply. “The Public Works Department has no authority to make grants to the local authority to assist it in carrying out work of this nature and, in offering to build the main line as far as Culverden as part of its general system I am of opinion that the department has gone as far as it can reasonably be expected to go. I understand, since the deputation from your board waited upon me, that the demand for power' in Hanmer may be considerably increased, and hope that in consequence it may be possible for you to accept the offer that had previously been made to you." . It was decided that the chairman of the board (Mr L. B. Evans) and the Engineer-Secretary’ (Mr A. Buckingham) should go to Wellington and interview the Minister and officials of the department in an effort to reach some satisfactory solution of the difficulty.
