TRAMWAY LOSSES
. TO THE EDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir,—And so our Labour Tramway Board has run into a bigger deficit than ever —more than £20,000. And how calmly we take it. We are getting so accustomed to splash finance by the Labour Party that no notice is taken of it. Apologists were quick a year or two ago to explain that deficiencies were due to increases in wages, but the new chairman of the board told us on Saturday that the amount given to employees since Labour secured control has been £26,000. Yet the deficits over the same period must be many thousands in excess of that amount. The shortage of £20,258 last year has occurred, despite increase in fares and despite the improvement in the economic life of the country. We shall be again rated for this mismanagement, yet the poor worm gives no sign of even turning.—Yours, etc., ONLY A RATEPAYER. April 20. 1937.
