WONTHAGGI MINE DISASTER
* NEGLIGENCE REVEALED AT INQUEST JURY RECOMMENDS BETTER CONTROL (Received April 3, 1.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 2. A finding of accidental death coupled with a rider that negligence had been shown by the management of the State coal mine, was returned by the jury this evening at the inquest into the Wonthaggi disaster in which 13 were killed on February 15. The jury found the management was guilty of negligence in not haying the mine inspected on the day of the disaster in the same manner as on ordinary working days. The verdict added that the jury could not decide where the explosion started nor by whom the naked light which ignited the gas was carried. For more efficient operation, the jury recommended that the minefield be controlled by both the general manager and the mine manager. Three hundred residents of Wonthaggi waited anxiously for an hour and a half outside the courthouse for the jury’s return.
