THE CORONATION

■ w CELEBRATION IN THE SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT DECLARES HOLIDAY The activities of New Zealand primary and secondary schools the day before and the day of, the Coronation have been decided by the Department of Education and Education Boards and authorities controlling secondary schools have received circulars. Schools are to be closed on May 12, except fpr a short period in the morning. On the day before the Coronation, teachers in all schools will explain to pupils, as part of the curriculum, the significance of the Coronation. On May 12, pupils will assemble at their schools at 9 a.m. and after a suitable ceremony, they will disperse for the day. Where local authorities desire the children to take part in a combined gathering, discretion is left with the local Education Board or the secondary school authority. All schools are urged to provide a suitable symbol of commemoration, such as the planting of a tree in the school grounds. Each school will also be provided free with a permanent souvenir, the nature of which has not yet been decided. CORONATION SOUVENIR NEARLY 700 PHOTOGRAPHS The famous London publishing house, Odhams Press, Ltd., is offering one of the most remarkable publishing achievements of the century. It is the Coronation Book of King George VI. and Queen Elizabeth, a brilliant, permanent souvenir comprising 512 pages, nearly 700 photographs, and a vivid 40,000-word review of the lives and of the outstanding activities of their Majesties and the two Princesses. This work has been specially compiled for the occasion, and is absolutely new from the first page to the last. There is here a cavalcade of unforgettable happenings, beginning with his Majesty as a baby in the arms of Queen Victoria; and the work ranges through four reigns—40 odd years, crowded with Royal work, inspiration, and achievement., Here, too, is recorded the life of Queen Elizabeth, from her earliest days to the Royal wedding. The birth of the princesses, their lives and adventures, are all recorded. The book has an embossed antique art-leather cover, and it is offered at a surprisingly low price.
