TE WAIPOUNAMU

ANNUAL REPORT That the number of pupils at Te : Waipounamu Maori Girls School has - increased from 19 to 23, that subscrip--1 tions and grants have, in the last i year, decreased slightly, but that the ) amount received in fees has increased ' are points emphasised in the annual ; report, which will be presented by the E council of the school at the annual i meeting to-day. ; After an interval of many years, t scholars have again come to the school • from the Chatham Islands. During f the year the council had resolved to I admit no girl who has not attained to Standard I. qualification. Three for- - mer scholars are now teaching in t native schools in the North Island, two - of them having started their work . during last year. Two girls gained c their proficiency certificates during t the year, and a Trentham scholarship , was awarded to a very promising , scholar, Marie Skipper, daughter of a , returned soldier. The installation of t wireless at the school, largely throughthe efforts of Miss Wilson, of Clifton. Sumner, had enabled the scholars to enjoy the radio educational sessions and the children’s hour. The girls had shown keen interest in “Lady Gay’s” pages in “The Press.” Two prizes had been won by the school at the Church Missionary, Society’s excellent display, and prizes were won in the hobbies exhibition. ! The Community of the Sacred t Name, the report continued, had given ’ its accustomed help to the school, and ’ provided a helper for two terms. Miss 1 A. I. Foley had helped in the third 1 terra, and Miss Price, well known for- ; meny at St. Albans, had joined the [ staff for 1937. The retirement of Mr L. E. Haines from the honorary treasurership was . deplored, and he was thanked for his ■ work as treasurer and as secretary. : “The recent increase in the cost of > foods, etc.,” the report says, “presses ’ very hai’dly on the school, and com- ; pels the council to plead for an in- . 'cx-ease, and not a decrease, in the ; annual subscriptions and donations ! from friends of the school. It is re- ; grettable that the Maori Purposes Fund Control Board, while making I very large grants to North Island in- • stitutions, has recently declined to ■ give any help to this school, the only > boarding school for Maori girls in the | South Island.” 1 Thanks are expressed to the honor- . ary medical officer. Dr. E. IT. H. Tay- ; lor; St. Francis Guild, Watorton Ladies’ . Guild, All Peoples’ Union, Toe j H women helpers, Tom H men, . Westport Coal Company, Miss Duffy, ! Mrs Tichbon, the editor of the “Church > News,” the North Canterbury Hospital I Board, and parishes which have given i harvest offerings, Sister Kate, the ' teaching staff, and the domestic staff, [ and Miss Hilda Harding. 5 CHRISTCHURCH HIGH \ SCHOOL I OLD GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION : Mrs George Maginness, president, . presided over the annual meeting, , of the Christchurch High School Old . Girls’ Association, which was attended ■ by a large number of members. The report and balance-sheet were • very satisfactory, and reference was > made to the balance in the jubilee gift > fund, which had been earmarked for : some social amenity for the lunch-room 1 in the building now being erected| The ’ president paid a tribute to the work ' done by the secretary and committee, ’ to whose efforts she attributed the suc- ’ cess of the last year. Miss Joan Gray spoke on the work ; of the cricket club and urged the necessity for more members. Miss Pessy ' Hollander gave a short talk on the work of the drama circle, in which there were still openings, especially for older members. Miss Edith French reported on the tramping club’s activities, and arrangements were suggested for a change of day for the i weekly tramp. The president said that the sixtieth ’ jubilee of the opening of the school ’ would fall on September 13 this year. A discussion ensued on the advisability of postponing jubilee celebrations until | a date in February, 1938, as building operations would then be completed. I It was pointed out that although a hall could be hired for the various functions,' the whole sentiment of the ] jubilee centred round the actual school ‘ buildings. A skeleton dance committee was set | up with power to add to its number. The election of officers for the coming year resulted as follows:—Presi- | dent, Mrs Edwin Hamilton; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames George Maginness, ! N. Bates, and R. Glen; committee. Mrs ; C. G. M. Boyce, Misses Beryl BiggWither, Evelyn Comyns Thomas, Edith French, and Jewel Hobbs; secretary and treasurer. Miss Ada Fairbairn; hon. auditor, Mrs C. H. Perkins. A vote of thanks to the outgoing president, who had fulfilled her period of office, was proposed by Miss H. Lockwood. Previously a garden party had been held at "Acland,” which had been kindly lent to the association for the . purpose. Despite unfavourable weather . there was a large attendance of memI bers and guests. A feature of the . afternoon was the number of early - members of the school who attended. J TTie president (Mrs George Maginl ness) welcomed the guests and ex- . pressed the appreciation of the com- • mittee to Miss P. M. Clarke and Mrs \ Norton Griffiths for their valuable help, j The afternoon was spent in tennis, T deck tennis, clock golf, and a lexicon . competition, which was won by Miss Muriel Biggs.
