(Received March 3, 11.50 p.m.)
MELBOURNE, March 3,
Two wickets fell with the first two balls to-day and England was all out in the second innings for 165, losing the fifth test with Australia, which carried the "Ashes," by an innings and 200 runs. A crowd of 10,000 watched the closing scenes, but all the play they saw was Voce, who resumed the innings with Verity, and Fames, the last man, caught from big hits off Fleetwood-Smith by Badcock and Nash respectively. With the match over, the stumps, bails, and ball were claimed as souvenirs. Bradman and Allen were invited to broadcast. Bradman, who received an ovation, said that he was delighted Australia had retained the "Ashes. He thanked his team-mates for their loyal support and paid a tribute to. Allen's captaincy and the wonderful sportsmanship of the English team, from whom they had not received a word of complaint. Bad weather in four tests brought misfortune on two occasions to each side, but all the games were fought in the best spirit and in accordance with the best cricket traditions. Allen, who was also warmly applauded, said: "I make no bones about it; I am a very disappointed man. Undoubtedly the best side won on wickets such as we played on. We also encountered Bradman: in his best form with the bat and the infernal coin." Allen concluded i>y saying that this was probably his last cricket on the Melbourne ground. "EXCUSES OF NO AVAIL"
ENGLISHMEN REPROACHED FOR LACK OF RESOLUTION
(Received March 3, 7.30 p.m.)
LONDON, March 2.
"Faced with a total which, if the position had been reversed,, would have stiffened the backs of the Australians, our players set about their task as if the match were already lost," says .the "Daily Mail'; in a leading article on the cricket test. "Evidence of a little dourness and determination would have been a great encouragement for the future. The "News-Chronicle," editorially says:—"One lesson of the tour is the importance of winning the toss, which in a timeless test is evidently of great psychological value. The "Daily Telegraph," in a leading article, says:—"Australia's triumph is so decisive as to make excuses of no avail. Allen has shown himself a brave captain. Now we can look forward to the next series, trusting that fate will be kinder."
