CONTINGENT FOR CORONATION

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ DISCUSSION RECOMMENDATIONS MADE TO HEADQUARTERS The Coronation subcommittee of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association has decided that 20 of the applications received for inclusion in the Coronation- contingent should be forwarded to headquarters with the president’s preference indicated. The rest should-be forwarded without recommendation. When the report of the sub-commit-tee was adopted at last evening’s meeting of the executive of the association, Mr J. S. Chisholm, a member of the sub-committee, said that the choice for preference had largely to be by guess-work. There should have been more particulars required on the forms submitted. The president' of the association (Mr B. 0.-Priddis) said that it was possible to indicate preference only if a man were known. Headquarters would naturally take it that men concerning whom no recommendation was made were unknown to the sub-committee. "

Mr W. E. Leadley: And consequently to headquarters. Mr A. W. Mewton: It is like taking a chance in “Tatt’s.”

The chairman said that he too|c it that headquarters would go into the applicants’ war records. Mr W, E. Leadley said that of the two men chosen in the association’s area, one might come from South Canterbury and another frota Westland. It was possible, members said, that none might be chosen from Christchurch. There was bound to be some disappointment. “There is a rumour going round,” said Mr Headley with a smile, “that the secretary and myself have been chosen. Of course no member of the executive or the -staff has made application.”
