ARMAMENTS FOR BRITAIN
Forecast of Defence Estimates BUILDING FOR NAVY AND FLEET AIR ARM (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received February 16, 12.16 a.m.) LONDON, February 15. “The defence estimates for 193738 will show a vast increase on the expenditure in 1936-37,” says the “Morning Post.” “Approximate expenditure is expected to be as follows; Navy, £110,000,000 to £120'000,000; Air Force, £50,000,000; Army, £57,000,000.
“It is conservatively estimated that the naval shipbuilding programme will include two or three capital ships, six cruisers, 18 destroyers. from six to eight submarines, a number of sloops, minesweepers, and other small craft, and possibly one aircraft-carrier. Provision for the fleet air arm will certainly show a large increase. Three aircraft-carriers are being built, for which 200 machines will be required in the next two years in addition io normal replacements. Probably £8,400,000.wi1l be required for this. “A further increase of man power is also necessary, and will probably be by no fewer than 6000.”
