HOLY TRINITY CHURCH

At a meeting of the vestry of Holy Trinity Church on Sunday night it was unanimously decided to ask the vicar, the Rev. E. Hanna, to reconsider his decision to resign. Mr Hanna, however, announced that he had already accepted the cure of Leeston, and bis resignation was therefore accepted.

Opening of New Classrooms A decision to open the- new classrooms on March 1. the date.on which the schools resume, has been made by the committee of the Lyttelton District High School. The presentation of prizes will be made on that date, and, the pupils will receive refreshments to celebrate the opening of the new classrooms.

The committee hopes that the Minister for Education (the Hon, P. Fraser) will be present, also the member for Lyttelton (Mr T. H. McCombs), the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton),, and the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board.

Picnic Residents of Rapaki and friends from Lyttelton and Port Levy held their annual picnic at Quail Island on Sunday. Fortunately the weather, which had been unfavourable at first, Improved and the out-, ihg was a most enjoyable one, all participating ,in the various games and competitions. Borough Council ; The Lyttelton Borough' Council met last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton), Crs. A. G. Sinclair, W. T. Foster, D. Sargentina, R. Cairns, R. Fenton, J, N. Neville. W. W. Toy, and G. S, Morris, . : The council consented to the transfer of the lease of property at Corsair Bay from W. C. Crowthers to L. V. Crothers. , , Permission was granted to the Heathcote County Council to erect an electric power line over part of: the Borough Council’s waterworks property at Heathcote Valley. Dr. J. Restell Thomas wrote asking that, repairs and improvement should be made to the approach to his property at Diamond Harbour. It was decided to reply that-the approach had been left in its present- condition by the Public Works Department and that the council was prepared to reconstruct it at his expense. Mr G. H. Ticehurst, Oxford street, wrote asking that, when the last day of the discount period for electric light and gas accounts falls on a Saturday, on which day the office is closed, the period should be extended to the following Monday. On the motion of Cr. Toy, seconded by the Mayor,, it wqs decided, to reply that in' future, where meters are read late in the . month, the discount period shall terminate on the Friday preceding,, if, the end of -the month falls during the week-end. In reply to an enquiry by the council the secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr 0. H. Clibborn) wrote informing the council that the, board had decided that it would have no ob-

jection to the council leasing the jetty, at Corsair Bay. „ , • Cr. Sargenjtina said the council should endeavour to obtain some revenue from the jetty by leasing the right to use it. Cr. Sinclair: Would that deprive private boat owners of the use of the jetty? .-.v 1 ' The Mayor said it would. . Cr. Sargehtirfa said they should insert a clause in the lease providing that private boats could continue to use the jetty. , ■ . Cr. Foster said that under those conditions they would receive no tenders. On the motion of Cr. Sargentina. seconded by Cr. Morris, it was decided to bring the matter up for'consideration at the first meeting in August. Mr R. McGillivray, Fields Superintendent ■to the Department of Agrlculture, wrote stating that a report had been received from the department s chemist on samples of soil teken from the reclaimed land at Lyttelton, The report stated that the soil bore a very high salt content and measures would have to be taken to remove a considerable portion of the salt by l e ® c J“T ing and drainage before the land would be capable of supporting a normal pasture. The writer expressed his intention of 'again visiting Lyttelton to gain further the top nine inches of the soil. The Mayor said it was satisfactory. to know that the department was taking an interest in the area. The council had already decided to have the land ploughed during the winter. The letter was received. ■ * Mr F. Langbein, .the Main Highways Board’s representative on the District Highways Council, wrote informing the council that the board had undertaken to complete the Bay deviation' on condition that the local authorities between them contributed £875 towards the estimated cost, which was £3IOO. Tfie Christchurch City Council- agreed to give £4OO, the Keathcote County Council. £25, and the Sumner Borough Council £l4 Is lOd. The council was asked if it would agree to make some donation towards the cost of the deviation. Cr. Morris said he could not understand Sumner giving only £l4 Is lOd. He moved that the coimcil contribute £2O towards the cost. Cr. Foster seconded the motion. 1 Cr. Toy said the council had already given £SO towards the cost of th'e deviation. He could not see that the road was of any benefit to Lyttelton. The ■ Mayor supported the motion, which was opposed by Clrs. Sinclair , and Sargentina. The voting was equal. The Mayor said that although he had voted for the motion, he could not use his casting vote to dispose of the council’s funds. He would declare the motion lost.

. Councillor’s Travelling l Expenses A letter was received fromCr. W. W. Toy, stating that since October 1 he had been providing his own transport to:his home after council meetings at an. estimated cost, at sixpence a mile, of 9s 6d for each meeting. An alternative was to hire a launch each council meeting night, at a cost of £l, plus 10s an hour for any waiting time. He was prepared to continue to provide his own transport if the council would consent to reimburse him to the extent of 9s 6d a meeting. The Mayor said the claim was in order, and he moved that' the amount should be paid. The. motion was seconded by Cr. Cairns and carried, Cr. Sargentina voting against it. Payment of Rates

Cr. Sargentina, chairman of the finance committee, reported that of a total of £6311 17s due for rates £5994 16s Id had been paid by last Friday, the due date, leaving a balance of £317 8s lid outstanding. 1 : Personal 1
