DETECTING INTOXICATION IN MOTORISTS
* “SUSPECT SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE’* (PRESS ASSOCIATION TEtKORAU.) WELLINGTON, January 29. •‘For doctors, it would be a good thing towards determining a man’s fitness to drive, if in doubtful cases of intoxication the suspected person should be allowed to drive his car,” said Dr. A. A. Tennent, when giving evidence as a witness in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in a case in which a taxi proprietor was charged with being found intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. The magistrate: It appears to be the only acid test. There would be no danger, because the driving would be done undex supervision. Dr. Tennent: Doctors would be grateful for this opportunity. The magistrate: Of course, where the case is truly borderline, the verdict must be in the defendant’s favour. After hearing the evidence of both sides, the magistrate dismissed the ease, saying that there was a doubt.
