COOK'S FIRST VOYAGE

TO THB EDITOR OF THE PRJtSS. Sir, —Others will perhaps join with me in asking you to look up again the paragraph in your "General News" of to-day, in which you state that Saturday last, January 23, was the anni-

versary of Captain Cook's sighting of Cook Strait between the North and South Islands. Using as my authority the late Mr T. F. Cheeseman's short account of botanical discovery in New Zealand, I note that Captain Cook first entered Cook Strait on January 15, anchoring on the 16th in Queen Charlotte Sound. He had sighted land on October 6, and had anchored in Poverty Bay on October 8, 1769. Yours, etc., JAS. R. WILKINSON. January 25, 19317.
