Yesterday's Track Notes Seafox. recently recommissioned, had his first sprint over half a mile in company with Lady Athena, and he shaped pleasingly. He is very big in condition.

Wild Chase, due to make his reappearance in the Midsummer Handicap next week, worked nicely over one mile in company with Top Notch. Wild Chase is doing well now after the spell which was necessary after his racing at the Cup meeting, and Top Notch has overcome the effects of her mishap before she started her holiday racing. After galloping a useful half-mile with Comus, Dictate was lame when he pulled up. It is a recurrence of the same trouble as prevented him from carrying out the holiday programme arranged for him. In Best Form

Royal Chief showed plenty of dash when working over five furlongs, and he promises to strip in his best order to contest the Middle Park Plate next week.

By the way in which he galloped over seven furlongs in company with Palady, Forum has derived a lot of benefit from his racing in the south during the holidays. It was easily his best track effort since he arrived at Riccarton and evidently he is a much improved gelding. Vintage has not shown any ill effects from his Trentham racing, and was quite sound after his half-mile sprint. Paper Slipper showed his usual bril'iance in a half-mile run, which compared well with the best of the morning.

Joyous and La France pleased by f \e manner in which they left six fur- ! ngs behind. Both are in forward c' der.

Silver Sight and Miracle were not - luired to do their best in a half-mile in. • Although the former has got ' rough a considerable amount of work is carrying a lot of condition. He ly race at Riccarton next week. Fairway did not have any the bet- ' .- of the deal in a smart half-mile : rint with Gold Label. '. hoolmg "Polydora (G. Ridgway) and Hunting : g, separately (A. Stove), were sent ! ice over the two brush schooling '.rdles. Polydora's display was satisctory. and Hunting Bag gave a fine < -.hibition for a novice.

' -r Steeplechases Sky Pilot has been returned to C. <■'. McCarthy to be prepared for .' seplechase events, a department for ■ hich he showed an aotitude when : hooled before being sent to his owner's ■ ace to spell. He arrived back at 2adquarters in fine order. Rabboni ' as also returned to the same stable, "ut it is his trainer's intention to let ihis two-year-old have another month or two on the easy list before placing him in training again, although he has quite recovered from the injury he 'uffered. Rabboni met with an accident when galloping last spring, and it was found necessary to give him a complete spell. He was gelded before being turned out.

:tebel Chief for South F. Hall has decided to nominate Rebel Chief for the Winton and Gore ■meetings, which follow the Wingatui fixture. If he races satisfactorily at Ric>.:arton and Wingatui he will be taken on from Wingatui for the meetings mentioned. Hecent Arrival

M. Conza has started on the preparation of the Nightmarch—Alyson ■ wo-year-old colt, which he purchased ;it Trentham last week.

.Vanganui Cup Winner. Master Cyklon, who scored his most important victory to date in the Vanganui Cup, is owned by Messrs J. M. Paul and C. G. Stowe, and is trained ly C. G. Stowe at Hastings, in whose lomination Cuddle earned her early accesses. Master Cyklon is a four-:'ear-old gelding by Hunting Song from Cytola, by Cykloa (sire of Trivalve) 'rom Tola, by Prince. Foote—Seville, ! iy Wallace, and he is a brother to the former Riccarton-trained Master Tony, "vho failed to graduate from maiden company. His previous win was a', the lawke'.s Bay meeting in January vhen he won the President's Handicap ->f one mile and a quarter. He has now von five races, three of which he :ecured last season.

Mention of Cyklon's name in Master pedigree recalls the unusual listory attached to the sire who afterwards was so successful in Australia.

Bred by Lord d'Abernon, Cyklon ■vhen a foal was sold, together with ■ lis dam, to the Prussian Government ■nd joined the Graditz Stud. As a • hree-year-old he was sent back to England to be trained for Count Lehnlorff, and he had some success. Cyklon vas still in England when the war !)egan. He was then seized as enemy iroperty by the Britir' Government, rom whom he was purchased by Frank 3ullock and sent to Australia, where ie won several races before being reared to the stud.

TROTTING NOTES Answer to Correspondent T.K., Hanmer Springs—WorthyLight, 4min 19sec, 1; Roi I’Or, 4min 14 l-ssec, 2; Glenrossie, 4min 17 3-ssec, 3. Gamble Fails In the Dunedin Cup yesterday Gamble appears to have been offered every chance to make good, but he failed long before the real business of racing commenced. The Jack Potts colt may have been short of a race and M. B. Edwards, his trainer, may have been unlucky when a buckled sulky wheel stopped him from giving his horse a proper tsfcr.Lin the Midsummer Handicap at Addffigton on Saturday. Gamble is recognised as a great stayer, and it was surprising to see him fade out as he did. Willow Wave

Willow Wave, usually regarded as a very speedy racehorse, has the reputation of being bad at the barrier, but it is worthy of note that his best races have been run at Forbury Park, when the going has been heavy. Yesterday's win in the Dunedin Cup, however, was attained under ideal racing conditions and the Southland-bred pacer fairly outstayed one of the best fields that has contested the race. Willow Wave completed the hat-trick for O. E. Hooper, who had won the two previous races with Player and Big Author-. A Select Stud

One of the most select breeding establishments in New Zealand is presided over by Mr W. J. Morland, whose property is in Ham road, Upper Riccarton. In days gone by Mr Morland was a well-known amateur trainer and driver and had in his care Country Belle, who won the New Zealand Cup in 1915, and also took a record of 4min 22 4-ssec for two miles, and 2min 6 2-5 sec for a mile. Country Belle was not only a great race mare but she has earned fame as a producer, for her progeny include Countryman 2min 10 2-ssec, Escapade 4min 27 one of the best trotters ever raced in New Zealand, and Gold Country 4min 21 sec. Escapade has been at the stud cnly for a short period, but already she has left a more than useful pacer in Levity, and very promising youngsters in Diversion and Intrigue. Last season Escapade was mated with Gallant Knight and to the American stallion she has produced a colt foal. This year she has been mated with U. Scott. Another of Mr Morland's mares in Daisy Pointer (dam of Frisco Lady, Frisco Boy, and Fascination) has produced a filly foal to Gallant Knight and has been mated with U. Scott, while Rustic Maid by Rey de Oro— Country Belle, has her first foal by U. Scott and is in foal again to Gallant Knight. Barbara Worth, by Rey de Oro—Logan Chimes, by Logan Pointer —Curfew Bell, has a colt foal by U. Scott and is now in foal to Great Bingen. For the number of mares at his stud Mr Morland has achieved a big measure of success, the result of keen study of successful blood lines. In South Australia

Whereas totalisator wagering at the race meetings in South Australia is a thing of the past—only £14,000 was invested over the two recent meetings at Morphettville, and a great portion of this in the doubles machine—there is not any weakness in the betting through the machine at the trotting meetings at Wayville, says the Sydney "Referee." Covering the 15 meetings held there since October 3, the total has reached £104,905, the biggest night being on November 21, when the clerks handled £8173. The Government has received £5507 in the way of taxation, and £7867 has gone to the club in commission, the fractions amounting to £IB6O. With the championships on the horizon, it may be expected that record figures will be dis- ' closed at the future operations at Wayville for the remainder of the season.

NOTES ON THE RACING

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

Easy for Parachute

In a good betting race for the Vauxhall Handicap, there was not much between Axiom and Parachute, but the former extinguished his chance completely in the first two furlongs, while Calm Queen and Margaret Todd broke at, or just after, the dispatch. Parachute v/ent on in the lead, and in close order was followed by Parrish Chimes, Chiming Wrack, Golden Bingen, and Prince Harvester till thev approached the straight for the last time. Then Golden Bingen moved forward, but he broke inside the run home. Parrish Chimes also left his feet, leaving Parachute to come on for an easy win. Prince Harvester was the only one to finish on, Chiming Wrack just filling third place, through Parrish Chimes making another break. Parachute, who recently won at Timaru, and last May at Oamaru, never looked like breaking Accident Mars Race Toorak, Seaward de Oro, and Molly Direct were the only ones seriously backed in the Southland Handicap, with the first-named very much more in demand. Rollalcng was slow away, and Seaward de Oro and Stalwart broke up. Lynley de Oro rushed away to a good lead from Player, Alpine Prince, Lord Axworthy, Intrigue,. Molly Direct, and Diversion, but with a circuit to go, as the field was racing in close order, a nasty smash occurred. Irish Aggie and Mohican fell, and Toorak ran into them and fell. The leadership remained unchanged and Lynley de Oro and Player turned for home together. Player camo on and was winning very easily when Alpine Prince, with a final burst, ran him close. Molly Direct easily beat the tiring Lynley de Oro, while Diversion loft her feet when challenging half-way up the straight. The smash-up spoilt a good chance for Toorak and J. Bryce, jun., had to bo assisted from the track.

The winner has not previously gono solidly, but to-day he did not look like making a mistake. All the Way Win

Big Author won the Electric Handicap from start to finish and gave O E. Hooper two wins on end. He was preferred to Chancellor and Morello by the public, in fairly good betting on the six horse race, and they never experienced an anxious moment. The Central Otago-owned pacer was never asked to go. Morello made two bold attempts to run up to him, but had no chance. Noble Prince hung on well for third after following the winner most of the way. Chancellor broke with six furlongs to cover, and was not persevered with. Favourite Bracket Beaten Barton's triple bracket and Gamble carried more than twice as much again as' anything else in the Dunedin Cup. Once again it was left to O. E. Hooper [to provide the winner, Willow Wave.

who won both the principal events at the club's last meeting, again showing his liking for the Forbury track. Seven furlongs from home the field bunched, with Gamble, Rey Spec, Tempest, and Willow Wave in the lead. Indianapolis was trailing behind the second line of horses. On reaching the half-mile. Grand Mogul, Red Shadow, and then Indianapolis shot forward, but too many horses attempted to make forward moves at the same time, and Indianapolis was carried to the extreme outside. Grand Mogul was the only one able to sustain his run, and incidentally, coupled with the fact that he lost ground at the start, this settled a winning chance. Willow Wave shot away as he raced up behind him, and Gamble took third place, only to break and run off the course at the straight entrance. Willow Wave always had Grand Mogul at his mercy down the home stretch, and won easily. Tempest made a fast run into third place ahead of Rollo, with Bingen Palm, Roi l'Or and Red Shadow next.

In breaking three furlongs from heme. Blue Mountain did not help the chances of the back markers. The first mile was run in 2min 17 4-ssec, the mile and a half in 3min 25 3-ssec, making the last half about one minute.

Solid Trotting Wins Race

Bitters .veet was solidly supported to win the Otago Handicap, and she duly succeeded.

With a mile to go she had to give Golden Bingen and Parrish Chimes nearly 10 lengths, but three furlongs from the finish she had closed up behind this pair. As they straightened up Golden Bingen broke and left Parrish Chimes temporarily in charge, but the latter went up in the air when pressed by Bittersweet, leaving the favourite to run home on her own. Axiom appeared to have lost all chance when he broke in the first furlong, but he came down the straight with a great burst and almost reached Parrish Chimes, Calm Queen was leading comfortably when she again left her feet before they had run four furlongs. Over the last six furlongs there were only three in it. Favourite Left Tawny, who started a slightly better fancy than McGlusky, did not leave the mark in the Musselburgh Handicap. Jolly Queen and Dundee also failed to go away. The winner turned up in the fifth fancy Credit Funds. She rushed up to Gold Salute with a circuit to cover, and these two led Guy Mauritius, Sage King, and McGlusky down the back. The leaders turning for home were Gold Salute, Credit Funds, and Sage King. The first-named was holding the advantage inside the last furlong, but Credit Funds paced home too solidly and she was going on if anything at the post. Sage King went an honest race and held on gamely to keep Wee Wrack out of third position, and Elite Rey. followed by Oversight and Celebrity, was only a head behind Wee Wrack. The winner is a very useful sort, and has seldom run a bad race. Double Great Consistent There were only 20 tickets between Pot Luck and Double Great in the King George Handicap, this pair carrying the bulk of the investments. Double Great showed the way out from the barrier and he was never headed. Pot Luck made a determined effort to head him off as they raced for the judge, but his challenge was fruitless. His driver never moved on the winner, who in his last four starts has recorded three wins (two on end) and a third. Morello, who seems to be improving, was a fairly good third though he never was further up than this during the running. Chancellor collapsed two furlongs from home when second.

Grand Mogul Wins

The bracket of Grand Mogul and Tempest started the hottest favourite of the day in the Flying Handicap, and they nearly filled first and second places. Grand Mogul was driven to the iead after two and a half furlongs, and commencing the final circuit he was clear of Grace McElwyn, hauo, Tempest, and George Rey. Except that Blue Mountain, who had been slow away, gathered up the field down the back, there was no change as they raced for the straight, the leadex being two lengths clear. Once straightened up, Grace McElwyn set out after Grand Mogul, and Tempest, getting clear of a pocket, appeared on the outside. Grand Mogul was punished to get there, and Grace McElwyn, after shaking oft Tempest over the last 50 yards, ran Grand Mogul very close. Tempest, however, had the worst of the run, although Blue Mountain displayed great speed to finish fourth. Rcy Spec tailed the field throughout.

NOTES ON THE RACING

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

WANGANUI, January 28.

Easy for Beau Gallante

The hurdle race was won comfortably by Beau Gallante, to whom Court Arma was preferred in the betting. Beau Gallante allowed Royal Routine to lead for half the journey and then went to the front. Court Arma ran up to him at the last fence but Beau Gallante won fairly comfortably on the flat. Jusfr An Idea was a very poor third, and Royal Routine was fourth. Beau Gallante outclassed his opponents. Royal Routine ran a fair race, but he ran about a lot at his fences. Aiwai Wins Decisively

All form pointed to Aiwai in the two-year old race and she duly won. She began best with Scarf Dance but Airini showed brilliant speed and headed them off round the turn and into the straight. Scarf Dance had lost ground on the turn where Gaily became prominent, and when they were in line Airini stopped badly, Aiwai going on to win decisively from Scarf Dance, with Gaily well up, and Airini next. Aiwai won well but she might have been troubled by Scarf Dance had the latter not lost ground on the turn. Favourite's Bad Start Kia Tere, favourite in the Maiden field, failed to get off as well as he might have, being a trifle fractious at the barrier, and it might have cost him the race. All Happiness, Parakino, and Te Broney were most prominent to the turn, where All Happiness retired and Kia Tere had become more prominent. Te Broney held on in the straight to win handily, with Kia Tere finishing better than Parakino to head him on the post for second. Then came Black Fox and People's Idol.

They were a moderate lot and the winner is a six-year-old. Apprentices' Race

The Victory Hack Handicap for apprentice riders saw Taitoru win very narrowly from the fast finishing International. Taitoru went up to the leaders six furlong's from home and had sole charge over the last half mile, but International had to come from the rear of the field on the turn. Better placed a bit earlier he must have won. Airing, whose jockey lost an iron, was a fair third, also making up a bit of ground in the run home, but he had little in reserve from Reipar and Corowa at the post.

Airing weighed in 21b light and lost third money, an enquiry revealing no carelessness in the loss of his gear. Collapse of Favourite

Great Hope, a warm favourite for the hack seven, was well placed all the way to the straight, but he then failed badly to come home at all strongly. At this point Hatuma, who had been outside Great Hope, went' past the leaders, Etiquette and Mazzini, and held on for a handy win over Waipiro, with Cloudy Bay poking up on the rails for a close third. Then came Great Hope clear of the rest. Hatuma won nicely at the finish, although both Waipiro and Cloudy Bay had to come from the back. Cup Winner Well Ridden

Master Cyklon, admirably handled and close to the pace-maker all the way in the Wanganui Cup, came through in the straight to win very decisively from Geitel, who had made an earlier move past the pacemaker Blue Garter, and was actually the first

into line. This pair ot lightweights finished clear of the favourite, One Whetu, who just headed Blue Garter. One Whetu could have been closer had he been ridden out, as he was forced over a lot of ground in the running, and in the circumstances ran a good race. Grand Jury was very prominent on the home turn, but with Hunting Queen he appeared to suffer considerably from the crowding that took place entering the straight. Entail ran a poor race. Lavina Comfortably

Lavina won the Flying Handicap very comfortably. She got out first but allowed Symcony to lead her all the way to the straight, at which stage they were well clear of the others. Symcony stopped badly in the run home, but Lavina ran on for a win by a good margin from Royal Secret, who comfortably beat Ned Cuttle. Then came Pin Money and Symcony. Nothing had a chance with the winner. Another Favourite Fails

Sanhedrin was a firm favourite for the concluding event, but he never really flattered and finished fourth. All Spirit and Collodion carried on the pacemaking, and Imposture ran up prominently on the turn. Imposture took charge in the straight and won nicely from Collodion, who just headed All Spirit with Sanhedrim and Mister Quex next. Rustem got a bad run and was sent back to last in the first furlong.
