Professor Marples, who is going out to the Chair of Biology at Otago University, was educated at St. Bee's School, Cumberland, and Exeter College, Oxford. He holds the degree of M.A. (Oxon.) and M.Sc. (Manchester). He has held university appointments in Manchester and Bristol. Professor Marples is married and has one son, two of age. Mrs Marples is also a zoologist, and part of the spare time of herself and her husband is devoted to.observing animals in the field. At one time, Professor Marples spent a considerable amount of time observing birds, and some years ago, with the co-operation of the British Broadcasting Corporation, he cai-ried out a survey of the starling roosts of Great Britain. The Hon. P. L. Bathurst, son of Lord Bledisloe, was beaten by one second in the Carlton Cup open race, run on the Cresta Run at St. Moritz. Mr Bathurst, who was also second last year, had times of 46.7 seconds, 46.2 seconds and 46.5 seconds for an aggregate of 139.4 seconds, to the aggregate of 138.4 seconds of "W. L. Fiske, the famous American Olympic rider. Captain J. S. Coats, winner of the Cresta Grand National in 1933, 1934, and 1935, was third with an aggregate of 140.3 seconds. Lieutenant-Colonel R. Tristram Harper (formerly of Christchurch) has been chosen as Conservative candidate for Cheltenham at the next general election. Colonel Harper has not before fought an election, but for more than 30 years he has spoken for candidates. He is a South African war veteran. He is a director of Buenos Aires railway companies, and is president of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries." Colonel Acland Troyte (Conservative) and Sir Francis Acland (Samuelite Liberal) are his cousins.
