Duplication of Panama Through Nicaragua
ESTIMATED COST OF 722 MILLION DOLLARS (united press association—copyright.) (Received January 18, 12.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON, January 16. A . measure which will be expedited through Congress is that involving the construction of the oftmooted canal through Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It will be a duplicate of* Panama, principally as a measure .of increased national defence, and also to expedite trade with Latin America.
The recept earthquakes in Central America, which af any time might threaten the Panama Canal, and. the recurrent landslides, have emphasised the necessity for an auxiliary which, would be 173 miles long, cost 722,000,00() dollars, and take 10 years to- build.
