PASSAGE THROUGH KIEL CANAL
FOREIGN WARSHIPS MUST SEEK PERMISSION OFFICIAL NOTICE GIVEN IN BERLIN (Received January 17, 9.15 p.m.) BERLIN, January 16. An official communique in the Naval Ordnance Gazette closes the Kiel Canal to foreign warships, in spite of the Treaty of Versailles. Permission to pass must now be obtained through diplomatic channels. It is intimated that the governments concerned have already been informed. A Foreign Office spokesman said that the measure is an automatic sequel to the suspension of the waterways clauses in the Versailles Treaty.
